After Jay and Aphira had set up Aphira's tent, Blackout had set out to get some food.
Now Aphira sat down on her bed, petting Blackout's head (hey, that rhymes!) as the Lunawatcher lazily let a small minnow dangle halfway out of her mouth.
Aphira was relaxed. So was Blackout, for the first time in days. In fact, both of them were almost asleep when -
"Aphira!" Ryker's gruff, angry voice shouted as the head Hunter hit away the entrance to the tent. Both Blackout and Aphira scrambled up, tensing immediately. "What? What did I do now?" Aphira asked, but she was sure she knew.
This was about the dragon attack.
"The Riders showed up a day after you came here." Ryker's raw voice growled as his chocolate eyes narrowed, catching her emerald ones. "What a coincidence." One of his brows raised. "Look, didn't you think about the fact that they could've followed those other dragons here?" Aphira asked. "Who also showed up a day after you?" Ryker growled back.
"Do you really think I would've gotten them caught if I knew them or if they were my friends?" Aphira asked. "So you won't fight against the Riders?" Ryker's eyes flashed with burning anger. "That's not what I meant!" Aphira snapped. "Or so you say, but there's no way to know if you truly are loyal or not!" Ryker growled.
Suddenly, Blackout shot a blue-purple plasma blast between Aphira and Ryker as Ryker took a threatening step toward her rider. Aphira scrambled back, but Ryker casually lifted a foot and put it behind him. Blackout looked up at Aphira, her emerald green eyes shining. "Thanks, girl." Aphira breathed.
"Look, your men are in no way prepared to take down a dragon, so if I wanted to leave, I could blast my way out of here. But I don't." Aphira said, glaring into Ryker's gaze. "Not yet, anyway," Ryker growled, narrowing his eyes. "But if you do -" "I won't." Aphira's voice was stern and final. "I promise you that."
