“Mom!” You shouted happily as your mother opened the door to her house. It was finally Winter Break, where you had a whole month off. What better way to spend it than going back home for the holidays?

Your mother hugged you tightly as hard as she can. When she finally let go, her bottom lip started to tremble. “You changed a lot in five months."

You shrugged as invited you in the house. She picked up your suitcase and brought it inside and closed the door. “I just dyed my hair darker mom.” You giggled. You looked around the house and grinned at the Christmas decorations. “I love how you decorated the house with my ideas.”

The opening to the living room was draped with hanging bright white lights. Around the room, various red bows were placed. Four decorative stockings were hanging over the fireplace and a large tree was positioned in front of the large window.

After putting your suitcase and duffel bag in your room, you walked out your and strolled down the hallway. You stopped at your brother’s old room to see the door open. You looked inside for a few minutes and saw that his closet was open, and a large suitcase was popping out of it. Smiling to yourself, you went downstairs to join your mother.

“I didn’t know Bryan was staying over.” You announced as you saw your mother in the kitchen. With her old apron on, she took off her mittens and joined you at the bar. “Yeah, and he brought a woman over.”

You gasped, “Really? She’s not messed up in the head, right?” You joked. Your mother laughed at you and shook her head. “She’s nice. They work together.”

“Wow, this is surprising. I didn’t think he would get with another girl ever since his ‘true love’ broke up with him.” You said. Your brother only had one girlfriend through middle and high school. They were sweethearts until she broke up with him for unknown reasons.

“Where are they?” You asked. “He went to pick her up. You’ll love her, she likes musicals and all that jazz you like too.”

You nodded in approval; ready to meet this girl your bother has his eyes on.

“Where’s your lover?” Your mom teased at you. You told her about all the friends you made, including Derek. She misunderstood that he was just only your friend though.

“He’s my friend mom,” you groaned. “And he’s coming after Christmas to visit.”

“Can’t wait to meet him.” She grinned as she got up and took her famous Sweet Potato Pie out of the oven. You smiled as you thought about all the people that would come over just for her sweets. It was popular around the neighborhood.

The doorbell’s sound rung inside the house. Out of curiosity, you went to go answer to. Opening the door, a male was standing outside smiling at you. He looked a little older than you and taller. His blonde hair drew attention to his gorgeous face. He wore a black jacket that wasn’t zipped up, and his white v-neck shirt was pecking under the jacket.

“Hi…” You said a bit awkwardly.

“Hi.” He said back to you. His brown eyes scanned your face and then made their way down your body. You bit your lip and looked away awkwardly.

“Um…you need something?” You asked him, breaking the ice. He chuckled. “I just moved into the neighborhood. My neighbors told me that you make the best sweets around. I have a sweet tooth and I wanted to know if you can make me a Sweet Potato Pie for Christmas.” He smiled sweetly.

You gulped and held in your laughter. He though that you were your mother! “Umm…”

“But it’s fine if you can’t! I know you’re probably busy with the holidays and family stuff.”

“Actually-”

“Oh you can?” He cut you off as he asked. His face was full of hope and determination.

“Who’s this?” Your mother said as she appeared in the doorway to see who was at the door. Her eyes widen for a moment but they changed back to normal. “I’m the baker, this is actually my daughter.” She smiled and pushed you a little out of the way.

You giggled as the mysterious bae faceplamed himself and chuckled. “Oh, that makes since.”

You looked at him taken back. What’s that supposed to mean? You looked back at the two and saw that they were laughing like they were best friends.

“…and I’m Y/M/N*.” She held out her hand and he shook it proudly. “This weekend there is the town’s Christmas party at the Lion’s Club. You’re more than welcome to attend. You can bring your plus one too if you want.”

“That sounds good. I’ll be there. I could meet some people from town, and bringing a plus one isn’t an option for me. I moved here alone.”

Your phone started ringing in your pocket and you excused yourself from the two of them. You walked into the living room and saw that Derek was calling you.

“Hey Derek, what’s up?”

“I’m at home now, finally! I’m just resting. Thought I’ll give you a call. What you up to?”

You sat on the couch and stretched. “Same here. Just waiting for my brother and his new girlfriend to arrive.”

“Hey,” he said after you finished talking. You heard your mother closing the door from behind you. “Yes Derek?”

“I miss you!”

You laughed, “I miss you too Derek.”

“Talking to your boyfriend?” You heard the voice from earlier behind you. You turned around and saw the mysterious bae standing by your mother. She glanced at you. “Is that Derek?”

“Who’s that?” Derek said from over the phone.

“Just my mother and her new friend,” you said to Derek. “Yes it’s Derek and no he isn’t my boyfriend.” You told the two.

“I wish…” Derek whispered over the phone but you chose to ignore the comment. Your mother just shrugged as she led her new friend inside her kitchen.

You looked back at the too before continuing your conversation with Derek.
