(past)

I sit outside in the cold, the sun slowly moving back into its cage. Father put me out here as a punishment, for not shooting the animal. I felt bad. He says that emotions, sympathy, guilt is for the weak.

My teeth chatter, it's been a couple hours since I've been out here. At first it was okay, warm so I thought of some of the books I had read. Then all I could focus was the cold. Cold. Cold.

'Hi!' A cheery voice causes my gaze to flicker up, and I see a young girl around my age, her long hair tumbling down to her waist and her white dress reminding me of the angels from the books, 'I'm Blair!' She smiles warmly holding her hand out, I take it with my shaking arms.

'What is your name?' She sits beside me, but I don't reply, father might get angry 'Hmm, you don't seem to speak much, it's okay, I'll call you...' She brings her finger to her lip to think 'Grey eyes.'

A warmth exudes her, and all I can focus on is the cold surrounding me.

'You look cold, would you like me coat?' She points to her pink furry coat, and without another word pulls it off, giving it to me 'Oh! I also brought some skittles, since I ran from home, would you like to have it?'

I hadn't eaten since breakfast because I was in trouble and so I gave a quick nod and she gave the packet to me, but her eyes remained very much on the skittles.

'You can have some too.' I pour some into her hands and her face beams.

'Does that mean we are friends? Because friends share?' Her expression is giddy.

'We can be friends.' I say back.

'Okay...Friend! I should get going before my mum tells me off.' She smiles 'You can keep the coat, pink is not my colour anyways...'

'Calvin...' I reply, 'My name is Calvin.'

Blair and I quickly become close friends, we would meet up when father was on a business trip, or when I had a punishment. She was a light, a bright candle.

I limp outside, today was a particularly bad day, father had beat me black and blue after he found me going through photos of Gabbie...

This time I didn't cry. I don't know why because it really hurts. Maybe fathers lessons are paying off...

I trip and fall on the floor, I was meant to meet Blair. But the whole world is spinning and my vision is blackening...
