____________________________________"Kitan was like a ray of sunshine," he began, his eyes taking on a far away look.
"No, no, she wasn't just like it. She was a ray of sunshine, sent to brighten my life," he corrected himself, not wanting to misquote her importance to him.
Too bad he sucked the shine out of the ray of sun, he thought bitterly. Because he was such a giant screw-up.
His eyes watered, as he remembered the impact of every unkind word he'd said to her; every time he tore her down with scathing words; every opportunity he'd missed to show her how much he loved her.
More than ever, he wished he could go back in time for a do over. He wanted to fix the stupid, blind mistakes that he made, that had caused his relationship with her to fray.
"I remember when I met her, so very clearly. I was at work when we met, at the engineering company where I worked.
"The day had been so boring and monotonous, as usual. Until my lunch break, where, we quite literally, crashed into one another. She was representing the firm that we contracted to help audit the company's finances.
"She looked like a dream, that day. Very beautiful, she was. She exuded light and she oozed confidence; and knowing me, I was low-key intimidated by her.
"After the first fifteen minutes of our meeting; she started giving me some signals, hinting at the possibility of us starting something with each other. I recognised the green light all right, but I pretended to be oblivious.
"One thing about Kitan was that she was very determined," he divulged. And the toxic combination of her naive and stubborn determination and his lax behaviour, had ruined them both, destroyed them, even.
"Upon meeting me, she was convinced I was the one she wanted. So, she pursued me in every sense, relentlessly. I turned down her advances more than a dozen times, but she never got tired. If there was anything that girl was, she was persistent.
"From the day that we met; she latched onto me; and followed me to Iya Moria's Abula Spot on Allen Avenue, just so she could get to know me more. She used to joke about it; that that was our first date, even though I didn't know it then.
"She did that a lot, you know?" he said, his tone wistful.
"Did what?" she coaxed, gently.
"Because of her attraction to me, she changed lots of things about herself, to fit my standards. She liked me that much.
"Kitan was no doubt an upper class girl, with expensive taste. I could tell that she was very uncomfortable that day when I told her I was going to a commoner's bukka to eat.
"Even from her comments, she hinted that she was suspicious about the quality and hygiene of the food they served. But she never outrightly complained. I guess she figured that if I could eat it without reservations, then she didn't really have anything to worry about.
"Quite understandably, she was used to fine dining and not eating local. Never stepped foot in a canteen all through her life. But she did that day, for a guy she hadn't known for even up to an hour."
