"Just a few more moments and I'll be done dear" the seamstress smiled. She was a mutated arachnid. She was a head shorter than me and if I had a fear of spiders I would be terrified but nothing about her seemed to frighten me. Her six eyes were warm and her voice was like the colour of her body. Midnight silk. She gracefully circled me on her six legs making my dress around me as I stood there.
She was very fast and the only tools she used was her long sharp fingers and the spider threads that kept coming endlessly out of her hip. It was like she was wrapping me up like a fly but my cocoon wasn't an object of death but beauty.
"There you are deary" she said happily backing up to look at her work. I walked over to a long length mirror on the wall. The gown was entirely made out of spider silk. It was grey but it truly wasn't a dull shade. It sparkled from things that looked like raindrops that she must have placed on the fabric. It was sleeveless but with thick straps and a V neck to expose my collar bones. I looked behind me and it left a flowing trail. The back was somewhat exposed with laces climbing up it. And she had made me a chocker necklace from her webbed strands. It was utterly gourgous but I had to admit I never worn anything this revealing.
"It's beautiful, thank you so much" I thanked the seamstress. " it was my pleasure, you don't get to fit a princess every day do you" she beamed as she made her way to the door. "Have a scary night!" She said before leaving. I walked over to the chair beside the bed picking up the shoes on it. They were ash murder janes (Mary janes).
Jewel said I was too tall that no one would know the difference if I was wearing heels or not and even if I had to I would still refuse them. These were a good compromise, they barley had a heel.
Earlier Jewel had done my hair into a French braid. It still felt a little odd to have so much hair, I barely knew what to do with it.
A knock came from the heavy door and it opened. "Are you ready?" Jack popped in and his eye sockets became very wide along with his mouth. I flushed and smiled. Jack was to be my escort for this evening. He was wearing an even more formal version of his usual pin-striped suit.
"Yes I'm ready. What's the plan for tonight?" I asked as I took his arm. He straitened" Well since yours and my birthday was on Halloween and it wasn't celebrated, the party doubles as a birthday party for you" he grinned kindly "Really? What a scream!! Thank you Jack" I said. I greatly appreciated it. "No thanks necessary. They'll be a dinner and a little bit of dancing after" he said as we reached the bottom of the stairs. I stopped at the last step, Feeling queasy. "Danceing? Jack I don't know how to dance" I say worriedly. He took both of my hands in his. "It will be fine. I'll be there with you, and if you let me have the first dance I'll show you some steps." He said softly. I nodded feeling a little bit better and we walked arm in arm out the laboratory door. On the walk there I was only thinking about how comfortable I was with Jack. It was like we where old friends. For only a day of really knowing him we both got along extremely well. I could tell that he would be my actual friend instead of that pompous fur-ball.
We walked across the centre if town to were the hall was. It was pitch black outside but there were torches that lit the way.
"Practically everyone's inside already. You and I will have to go around back"he said as he lead me to a door at the back of the building. We went in and we appeared on a stage where the curtains were drawn in. I could hear a crowd chattering on the other side.
"Now you stand right here" he said guiding me to the middle of the stage. "Wait, where are you going!" I asked.
"I'll be out there introducing you to the town! The curtains will open and if the citizens have questions would you mind answering them?" He said. "I...I think I can do that" I stammered but wanted to seem confident. I can handle this. I said to myself. "Alright I'll be starting very soon" he gave me an encouraging grin and left the stage.
So I stood there in front of the curtains waiting, in the meantime it sounded like Jack had appeared to the crowd.
"Good evening everyone!! I am delighted to see all of you tonight. As you know there's been some rumour of a new citizen joining us. But it's not a new creature that arrived but one we thought we lost forever. Ghosts and Ghouls, I present to you. Nightshade, Princess of Shadows!" He announced as the curtains parted and a spotlight from above was set on me.
I felt a rack of nervousness in my stomach and I felt exposed. There was a huge gasp from everyone in the audience.
Jack came up onto the stage and took my hand and I felt a little better. "Go on say something" he wispered. I gulped "H...hello" I tried to say politely. And with that the crowd erupted in cheers. It kind of shocked me a little but the room now felt warm. When the creatures and monsters finally calmed down Jack cleared his throat "now if anyone would like, Nightshade will be answering any questions you would have"
At first the citizens were a little shy but a small green witch with another both floating on brooms asked "Are you young monster, a ghost or ghoul?" I smiled and answered "I'm a shadow"
