The Pumpkin king lent me his arm and I took it, seeming that my body was still just a little unstable. Jewel lent me a pair of her simple flats. We walked down the long flights of stairs and I couldn't help but look around. I don't know what to think of this place so far but when we opened the heavy metal door to go outside I think my mind was made up. I gasped not in fear but in awe and astonishment.
"Do you like the veiw?" He asked. "Like it? It's magnificent! It's as if I'm in a haunting but also good dream" I smile, not wanting to take my eyes off the town and beyond it.
We walked down the steps in which the doctors lab was on a hill and Jack opened the gate were we emerged into the town center. A strange looking fountain in the middle of the cobblestone street. Everything was a dark shade, no blinding colours that would have hurt to look at.
" Mr. Skellington. I didn't want to tell you at first but I know who you are. I actually know who everyone is and I know this town." I stated. Jack looks at me in surprise. " how is that possible?! You haven't been here any other time have you?" He asked puzzled. "Well in a sense" I say. " I don't follow" he said still confused. "Have you every heard of The Nightmare Before Christmas?" I started. Then I explained to him the basics of the movie ( he actually new what a movie was) and when I mention that Tim Burton made it he practically jumped. "Did you say Tim Burton?!" He exclaimed. "Um...yes" I answered. "I can't believe he documented the events and made it into a poem and movie!!! He's a genius!!" He said smiling extremely wide. "Wait! All of that actually happened?" I asked excitedly. "Yes! He was there!!" Jack answered. "How could Tim Burton have been here? He's human" I asked.
"Well that's a tricky subject. After a long long time us Holiday Beings sort of pass away in one way or another. Some live longer than others. Most of us believe that when we go our next life is human. Ordinary humans can never find the doors but there are special ones that can and actually fit in with the holiday creatures. Tim was a friend of mine back then." He smiled. "This just blew my mind!" I laugh and jack chuckles.
"We show old scary movies every weekend at town hall. We must definitely find a way to watch it!" He said determined.
"How can we do that?" I ask.
"All The doors are open to all of us every holiday, and rarely in emergencies so at Christmas both of us can go up there and hunt it down"he said. "That sounds great" I agreed.
I couldn't believe how comfortable I was when talking with someone. It actually felt good to converse with someone.
"May I call you Jack?" I asked not knowing if everyone called him by his first name. "Absolutely, Princess Nightshade" he answered. I chuckle "Only Nightshade is fine with me too" I continued " is it rude to ask how old you are? I was just wondering if we aged the same." I asked hesitantly. "No it's fine" he smiled. "Yes both our kind age the same. In human years I'm 92, but to find out your real age you just divide your human age by 4 which would make me 23." He did alway seem to me a young man."I'm 72 so that would make me..." I said while trying to do the math. "18, that's odd I always thought I was 16" I state. Maybe it's because I didn't experience what most 18 year olds have experienced. "How old where you when you became Pumpkin King?" I asked as we went through another gate, walking on a dirt path. "I was your age. My Father had left this world as my mother did the year before." He said. "Was he a historical creature like in ghost stories?" I questioned. "He was actually! Have you ever heard of The Headless Horsemen?" He asked wearing a wicked smile. "Your Kidding!!" I gasped. "Nope, used his own pumpkin head to throw at people. He once told me He scared the living daylights out of this poor guy, I think his name was Ichabod" he laughed. "Who was your mother" I asked. "A skeleton in a closet" he chuckled. "I believe your parents got names in the human world as well. Your father was like an uncle to me. Slender Maning, but it was no wonder why the humans called him Slenderman even being taller than me. I think you got his hight. Not many get up to my shoulders" he remarked but I stopped listening when he said Slenderman. "Hold on did you say Slenderman was my father!!! Are you serious?!?!" I practically freaked out. "Please tell me who my mother was!!" I shriek tugging on his arm. "Well Twilla Shadow was very good in hiding in mirrors so they called her Bloody Mary. Don't know were the Mary came from though." My jaw dropped."My parents are two of the most scariest entities in the human world!! I can't believe it!! This is amazing!!!" I feel my cheeks hurt from smiling so hard and my grip tightens on Jack even harder from this news.
"We're actually coming up to where your parents lived. On the edge of the Hinterland woods." He said while pointing to a stricture in the distance. When we came closer you could tell no one had lived there for a long time. It was four stories high and it looked like it was going to topple over but maybe that was how it was built. Each story randomly stacked on each other. In a way it looked like it was elegant and grande. "When we learned about your arrival, we're planing to restore it so you have a home. They'll be starting to fix it up right away" Jack stated. We started to walk back into town. "In the meantime you can stay at the doctors but if you like your welcome as a guest at my home as well" he said. "I think I'll stay at the doctors just in case I'm still not fully recovered" I say and also I liked Jewel and I don't know about being a Guest at his home yet. "Speaking of my health I couldn't be this skinny because I'm half slender" I say motioning to my fragile looking body. "Well it seams that you haven't been eating what you need in your diet. If I'm correct you can feed on forgotten thoughts. When people forget something the thought is just floating in the air. No one can see them but its rumoured that your kind can" he said. "Hmm.. It might take me a while to see them then because right now I don't see anything"I say looking around.
Jack grins "it's alright, the good thing is you can eat anything here and it will sustain you don't worry" he pated my hand.
We walk through the gate again and I now notice creatures walking around and talking amongst others, just like you would see in a regular town except these citizens looked a little more frightening but in a good unique way. Some of them seen us walking and began whispering to each other.
"Jack, what do you think their saying?" I whisper gesturing to them. "Maybe wondering who you are. Tonight I'm planing to announce your return back to the town at town Hall"he said motioning to a huge building. The roof was held by dark pillars and the holiday countdown clock was visible.
I nodded "I hope I'm invited" I tease. "Guest of honour" Jack graciously said.
"Say, it's about tea time. Would you like to come to my home and have some" he asked. "I would love to! I never had tea but I always wanted to" I said. "Perfect!" He chirped as he lead me to a big gate with a pumpkin on it. Through it was his lopsided, mismatched home. Seems like all the buildings in this world were oddly shaped. We both ascended the steep front steps but before Jack opened the door I stopped him. "Frist..." I said as I pulled on a rope on the side of the door and a shrill scream was heard. I giggled it was just like the movie. Everything exact.
Jack escorted me inside and it was what you would expect a pumpkin kings mansion would be like. Everything was creepily decorated.
"First I want to show you my tower library if you don't mind" he said motioning to a grand staircase leading up. "No i'd love to see it" I say.
As we both start up.I still have one thing to ask. "I know I've been bombarding you with questions all day but you mentioned someone leading me here, a guide. You said something about him." I say.
"Yes he was assigned to find you. He's the only one how can track holiday beings. Something to do with a sense he has. Anyway he found you in just a nick of time too." He stated. "Didn't you tell me his name too?" I ask. "Oh yes. His Name is Chat Noir." He finished as we got to the top of the stairs. What we didn't expect was a smooth mischievous voice coming from a windowsill of an open window. "Well it seems like the cats out of the bag" it said. The tall dark figure unrecognizable in the dark except for its mismatched glowing eyes like the colour of another's eyes I know of.
