Time flew by so fast that I didn't notice we were already graduating as high school students. The year has been tough. Everyone knew it wasn't easy getting to where we are right now.
Kiel and I grew even stronger as the year went by. We helped each other with our studies, took breaks together, went on more dates, helped each other grow, and gradually got to know the other better.
I know people say it isn't easy to study and have a relationship and the same time, but Kiel never made me feel that. He made sure we both use each other as a motivation instead of a distraction.
Now, we're both stepping on the same stage to be awarded as students with high honors.
Who said my boyfriend's a distraction?
"1, 2, 3, smile!" Ani ng photographer sa baba ng stage. Agad naman akong ngumiti ng malaki nang marinig ang magarbong palakpakan ng mga estudyante sa baba.
Like I'm being recognized. That my efforts were being acknowledged.
"Bff ko 'yan! Wooo!" Natawa ako nang mangibabaw ang boses ni Serena at Tal sa parte ng mga ABM. Tinawanan ko lang sila at bumaba na. They're embarrassing me!
Kaagad hinanap ng mata ko si Kiel at ngumiti sa kaniya sabay itinaas ang diploma at medal ko. He gave me a big goofy smile and mouthed an 'I'm so proud.' Sila na kasi ang sunod na section na aakyat ng stage. I'll be seeing my boyfriend on that stage.
Alam ko kung gaano siya nahirapan pataasin ang grades niya. Wala raw siyang masyadong pakialam noon at kahit anong matanggap niya ay sapat na, but he told me he'll strive harder for me. That he'd study well so we'd step on the same stage together.
And it's finally happening.
"Congrats!" Nauna sina Czyrielle sa pagbati sa akin na sinundan ng iba ko pang mga kaklase. I gave them a huge smile before proudly looking at my medal.
I worked hard for this. I deserve this medal.
"Kiel Ian Alexander Cervantes, with high honors..."
I gave off a satisfied smile when I saw him shaking hands with the principal and getting his diploma and medal. Sinabit iyon sa kaniya ni Tita. Hinanap niya rin ako at itinaas ang medal niya. I'm the proudest here, along with his family.
Lumingon ako sa pamilya ni Kiel sa likod na masayang masaya sa nangyayari. Tito even took the extra mile to take pictures of his son near the stage and proudly looking at them.
My parents told me they'd be here.
Ngunit natawag na ang pangalan ko, wala pa rin sila.
Sabi nila ay hahabol sila. Told me they have a surprise for me. Siguro matutuwa naman ako sa surprise nila, baka doon naman sila bumawi kaya inintindi ko nalang na walang nagsabit sa akin ng medal kahit sa totoo ay nakakalungkot talaga.
This is one way of proving to my Dad that Kiel had never been a distraction. Hanggang ngayon kasi ay ayaw niyang magkaboyfriend ako at hindi raw ako makakapag-aral ng maayos, and I told him to watch me get a high grade.
"Grabe, congrats talaga!" Masayang sigaw ni Tal nang matapos ang lahat at panay alisan na ang mga tao at picture.
"Picture tayong apat, bff goals!" dagdag ni Serena.
Czarina graduated with the highest honors. Tal graduated with honors while Serena didn't mind not getting anything as long as she graduated.
"Nakakahiya naman nu'ng sumigaw kayo," I laughed.
"Proud kasi kami! Ikaw nga 'di mo sinigaw pangalan namin pero panay ang ngiti sa boyfriend!" Dagdag niya pa at umaktong nasusuka.
"I took pictures of all of you in my phone!" depensa ko. "Proud kaya ako sainyo."
