-----

The morning had come of the Rodeo and I had been working so hard this past week to be ready for this. I don't plan on winning anything but I don't plan on going down with out a fight.

Through out the week I noticed Brooks would take the night off every Wednesday and friday night and go out some where.

I packed the truck at 4:30 in the morning and then headed off. Joe refused to come because he said he had to look after the farm and Brooks had the weekend off.

I was off and on my to Hayley and Dustin's house, yes they moved in together, to pick them up by 5. She felt that we may as well take one truck instead of two, save on fuel.

I pulled out up in the drive way at quarter past 5. I pulled up to her house and shone the high beams through the front door, announcing my arrival and a few minutes later I was greeted but Dustin.

"Hey whats up Texas?" He said as I jumped out of the truck cab.

"No don't call me that," I said really hanging on to my accent.

"Ok Tex," he said with a smile.

Ignoring him I continued in light conversation, "so I see you've lost your accent."

"And you've gained one," just as he finished that sentence Hayley came out.

"Dustin stop picking on her," she scolded.

"Sorry hun."

She came up beside him and gave him a side hug, then I noticed a shiny object coming from Hayley's left side about waist hight.

"Your engaged?!" I said my voice getting higher. Hayley just nodded and I ran and pulled her in for a hug, "eh I'm so happy for you."

Dustin just stood awkwardly over to the side, he lifts of his Acubra and runs a hand through his hair, "lets load up and head off."

My truck was a 3 side load horse truck and it was blue. We loaded up their two horses and we were of to the show ground.

To say I was excited was the under statement of the year. It had been so long since I had ridden in the Rodeo. I gave it up at the end of year 11 so I could focus on study. I was just a little keen.

We pulled up at the show ground around 6 and there weren't may cars so we got a good spot. Dustin when to get brecky and Hayley and I were left to sign in and tack up.

As I walked across the show ground towards the canteen to get Hayley and I breakfast. When lo and behold there in all his cowboy glory was Brooks, chatting up a buckle bunny. And for some reason it deeply bothered me, and for that I almost hated my self. Eager to brake it up I walk over.

"Hey Brooks what are you doin' here?" I asked raising and eye brow at the brown haired buckle bunny.

"Well hello to you miss Audrey, it was my day off and I thought that I better come down and see my sister here," he said looking over to the girl. Instantly I felt bad.

"Madison?" I said turing to face Brooks sister.

"The one and only," she said pulling me into an embrace, "how have you been girl?"

"Yeah pretty good, America was a whole new experience and the god parents were real nice," I replied.

"Thats so exciting, by the way I love your accent, its very cowgirl," she said with a giggle, "well I best be off, Todd is riding soon," and with a smile she was gone.

"So how you been?" asked Brooks when his sister was out of sight.

"Yeah good I spose, I should be goin' stuff to do," and with that I was gone.

The order of the day went as; campdrafting, rough riding (saddle/bare back bronc, steer and bull riding) and then the timed rodeo events:barrel races, rope and tie, steer wrestling, junior calf riding, team roping and breakaway roping.

And I was starting the day off with the campdraft. which had started at 6:30 and my run was no. 22, 63 and 140. The camp draft went for the majority of the daylight till about 4 then the rodeo started, and went well on into the night.

I looked down at my watch at it was 25 to 7, so I saddled up Denny and started warming up. Campdrafting was our strong suit. He was originally trained, by me, mainly in cattle work. About 15 minutes later my number was called and I went into the camp to pick my beast. I had picked the black baldy up the back, you get more point for a deeper cut out. I let the judge know the beast I was going to work, then I cut him out and worked him the the camp before calling for the gate. The steer shot out of the camp and I struggled to guid him around. We probably took the first peg a little to wide, but it didn't matter. we pushed on. Denny and I worked together tremendously. We pushed the steer through the gate and ended with a sliding stop.

Over the loud speaker a deep voice rang out, "We welcome back an old champion Audrey Ison with a score of 23 in the camp, 69 points for horse work and a 2 for the course, with a total of 94. The crowd went wild and the thrill that I had missed hit me like a tonne of bricks. I cantered out of the arena with the biggest smile on my face.
