Today was the day, Friday is finally here. I climbed into my junker of a car, my dress laying across the backseat in attempts to keep it wrinkle free. I threw my small makeup collection in a bag to bring with me, I washed my hair and tied it up in a braid so it will be wavy by tonight. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face as I stuck my key in the ignition, turning it. Well, that wiped the smile off my face. My car would not start. I groaned leaning against the steering wheel, shit.
Twenty minutes later and Sarah was driving me to work, thank god. She couldn't help but grin when she saw my dress, "you're gonna look hot." She winked as I glanced at the dress, I rolled my eyes, "that's kind of the whole point." I sighed, suddenly feeling a little nervous. "Do you know what he has planned?" I questioned suddenly having an epiphany, duh she's his sister. Sarah kept her eyes on the road, not daring to look at me, which gave me my answer. "All I can say is you'll love it. I swear." She answers all giddy as we pulled up to the country club. "Have a good day!" She shouted out the window, driving away as I lugged my stuff inside, folding the dress delicately and hiding it under the counter, my makeup with it. "Got a hot date?" Jake quipped, catching me hiding the stuff, "maybe." I blushed, clocking in and hoping the day would go by quickly, but it didn't, it felt like forever and a day.
Five thirty hit and I clocked out instantly, grabbing my stuff and rushing the bathroom, I locked myself in the over sized stall, taking a deep breath before I started applying my makeup, feeling extremely nervous for the night ahead. "I know it's early but I'm out here, don't rush." My phone buzzed, I hadn't realized what time it was, it was ten to six, I typed a quick response to Rafe, telling him I'll be out in a minute. I undid the braid, shaking my hair out lightly, somehow managing to zip up the back of my dress by myself. I stepped out of the stall, carrying my work clothes and my makeup out in my bag. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, I let a small smile grace my face, I looked good. The typical little black dress hugged me in all the right places, but had a flow skirt, not making it too sexy. I walked out, letting out a long breath as I rounded the corner, seeing Rafe in a pair of black slacks, and a blue button up, that hugged his arms in a way that made my knees go weak, he hadn't noticed me yet, so I used that to my advantage. I snuck up behind him, surprised that my heels hadn't given me away, surely he heard them. "Hey, who are you so dressed up for?" I questioned, he whipped himself around so fast that he almost lost his balance, "careful there big boy." I placed a hand on his shoulder. His eyes scanned me up and down, then followed up my arm to the hand on his shoulder. He grabbed it with his own, making me turn in a circle, "I could ask you the same thing." He grinned, he succeeded in making me laugh as I caught myself with his other hand. "Shall we?"
I walked closely next to him to his truck, butterflies going crazy in my stomach as he took my bag from me, placing it in the back seat before opening the car door for me. "Thank you." I smiled, pulling myself up into the truck, he just gave me a small nod, closing the door and running around to the drivers side. "So do I get to know where we're going?" I asked as we started the drive to wherever we're going, he shook his head, glancing at me quickly. "Nope." He popped the p and continued driving, his right arm resting on the center console, giving me the control of if I wanted to grab his hand or not, I opted not to, not yet at least. Maybe on the way back. "Are we staying on the island? We're awfully dressed up." I asked another question, hoping to get him to slip up, he shrugged, "time will tell." I pulled a face at his cryptic answer. My mind wandered trying to think of more questions, although the silence was nice, it didn't feel awkward. "Oh!" I gasped, startling Rafe. He gave me a wide eyed look, "what?" He quipped, his heart racing a little from my outburst. "Did Sarah help you plan this?" I asked sweetly, my fingers dancing around his, hoping to catch him off guard. "Yeah, why?" He asked, looking at our hands before back at the road.
I got all excited as I realized I knew what we were doing, he looked at me questioningly as he slowed to a stop, the traffic light turning red. "I know what we're doing." I grinned, looking at him, he couldn't help but smile at my happiness, "and what's that?" He asked taking the plunge and lacing our fingers together, "I always told Sarah that my dream date was going to this little mom and pop diner by the beach, all dressed up and staying on the beach afterward until it's late. Just talking and, wow I'm rambling." I blushed as he watched me carefully. "That's okay." The car behind us honked, this time making him blush a little, not realizing the light had turned green. "Well so much for a surprise." Rafe shrugged, pulling into a parking spot at the diner. "Don't move." He held a finger up as he hopped out of the truck, rushing to my side and opening the door, "I can open my own door, Rafe." I laughed as he held his hand out for me, helping me jump down from the truck.
The waitress did give us a funny look when we walked in, all dressed up, but we didn't care. We were here to have a good time, so that's what we're gonna do.
Time flew while we sat inside, eating most definitely the best burger I've ever had, Rafe agreed, and that's saying something, he gets kook food everyday. We walked down the sidewalk a little bit, finding a good place to get on to the beach, "can I?" I asked Rafe, putting a hand on his arm to steady myself as I took my heels off, "of course m'lady." He spoke in the worst accent I've ever heard, I grimaced at him, he shrugged in return. Once I had successfully removed my shoes we walked down the beach, sitting just out of the waters reach, the sun just barely disappearing, the moon starting to take its place. "What's it like? Being rich I mean." I questioned, holding myself up with my hands, my legs crossed out in front of me. Rafe mimicked my actions, studying my face, almost not hearing my question. "It's not as nice as everybody makes it sound. Most of our parents are jerks, everyone thinks we just get handed a big wad of cash, my dad is making me work for it at least." Rafe answered, I watched his lips move as he spoke, he caught me staring and smirked. "Earth to Charli." He laughed, I blushed meeting his eyes. "What about you? What is your life like?" He asked delicately, scooting a little closer to me.
"Oh boy, do you want the not so bad version? Or the real life fucked up version?" I replied honestly, he frowned for a second, "which ever one you're comfortable with." He sure does know how to answer a question in a way to make my heart skip a beat. I sat up right, he followed, wanting to keep his eyes on me as I spoke. I began to tell him almost everything about my life, my dad dying when I was only five, my moms issues, the constant in and out of her boyfriends, I knew he could tell I was leaving something out in that category, but he didn't pry. "Rafe." I whispered after I finished, he looked away from the water and at me, "I really want to kiss you." "So do it, Charli."
