The World is Quiet Here
Friday and Ian sat in the car, a comfortable silence surrounding them. Friday was at the wheel, her eyes focused on the road, and Ian was watching the scenery they passed. Occasionally their eyes would wander toward each other and they'd have a bit of small talk, but nothing too special. Until Friday said something interesting...
"I don't know exactly what it was, we were all feeling quite sad," Ian answered a question Friday had asked. Friday glanced over at him and swallowed.
She had thought about how her relationship with Ian would work. He couldn't know that Friday was in the organisation, but they couldn't exactly hide it from him. Melanie and Harrison were also recruited too. Friday worried over it at first, but then she thought that maybe, possibly, there was a chance that Ian was a volunteer.
"I didn't realise it was a sad occasion," said Friday. She knew that Ian might not respond how she wanted, but Friday had a feeling that he'd say those five words that she desperately needed to hear. The five words that would tell her that he'd been recruited too, that the world was quite here.
Ian looked at her with something in his eyes, but Friday wasn't sure what it was. He turned away and sighed a laugh.
"I wouldn't call it an occasion," Ian said, "I'd call it a... short period of time." Ian turned to look at Friday and saw the frown on her face.
"Hey, everything good, Barnes?"
Friday looked at him and smiled, but it didn't quite reach her eyes.
"Yeah, 'm alright."
The rest of the car ride was a little less comfortably silent, and Friday was a little bit stressed. How would she tell Ian? How would she hide it from him? She couldn't tell him, he couldn't know about the organisation. This was going to be a struggle.
As Ian looked out the window, he thought about how the world felt very quiet there.
