Lo
Sam's mom arrives early the next morning, and I slip out of his hospital room to meet her. In the lobby, I explain his prognosis: a severe concussion, four broken bones—two ribs, a wrist, and the collarbone—and a dislocated jaw. Some internal bleeding, but nothing serious. They'd thought, at first, that he might need emergency surgery to remove the spleen, but it turned out to be a false alarm. Still, Brandon had done appalling damage last night, and even after nearly twenty-four hours in this hospital, I am burning with the desire to make him pay.
Ms. Evans nods curtly as the details pour from my mouth. I'm telling her more than I probably need to—definitely more than Sam would want me to share—but it's a gift to have an adult here. Not that Jared, Jill, and Spencer haven't been incredible; they all have, each for different reasons. Jared's the one that got me Ms. Evans' number and has kept me apprised of news about Brandon (so far, none). Spencer and Jill brought fast food and candy, fresh off their wins at the fall tournament. But Ms. Evans is poised and motherly, listening with rapt attention as I regurgitate what I've heard from the doctors and nurses since arriving here and pulling me into a hug when I start to cry. It's not lost on me that I've spent the past month alternately hating and longing for her son—both so strongly they'd morphed me into an unrecognizable version of myself. Somehow, that all seems very far away now, as Ms. Evans and I walk back up the stairs to Sam's room.
"I'll wait out here," I say, when we reach it.
Ms. Evans gives me another quick squeeze, before opening the door and entering the room. I press my back against the wall and slide down to the floor. I'm wrecked with exhaustion, but Ms. Evans' arrival provides a shot of needed strength. I remember, vaguely, Sam (or maybe it was Spencer?) telling me that she's a lawyer. I wonder if she can help press charges against Brandon. Because I've decided two things with perfect clarity in the near-day I've spent in this hospital:
1. Brandon is going to jail for what he's done.
2. I love Sam. And I'm not going to let anything stop me from being with him.
