"SOMETHING IS COMING," THE VOICE of Mike Wheeler announced as the raven-haired boy glanced around the table at his friends. In the center of the wooden surface rested the board of their favorite game: Dungeons and Dragons. "Something hungry for blood. A shadow grows on the wall behind you, swallowing you in darkness. It is almost here."

"What is it?" a small boy by the Will Byers asked Mike. The other three members of their party leaned in closer with anticipation, waiting for Mike to reveal the monster they had to fight.

"What if it's the Demogorgon?" suggested Dustin Henderson. Will leaned back in his seat in exasperation, knowing how difficult it is to defeat that monster. "Oh, Jesus, we're so screwed if it's the Demogorgon."

"It's not the Demogorgon," Lucas Sinclair argued, creating erratic hand gestures in front of him. The only girl in their friend group, Carrie Holland, looked over at the dark-skinned boy sitting beside her.

"How do you know that?" she challenged, raising an eyebrow at him. Lucas glared at her in return. Mike, who had been watching his friends' anticipation increase with an amused expression, slammed small figurines onto the table.

"An army of troglodytes charge into the chamber!" he announced. Carrie glanced over at the boy with an unimpressed look on her face.

"Troglodytes?" she questioned. Will grinned at the girl's expression.

"Told ya," Lucas smirked at Dustin before letting out a small laugh. The kids chuckled—Dustin snorted—as Mike frowned. He looked off to the side with a worried expression across his freckled face.

"Wait a minute," he said, speaking in a soft voice. "Did you hear that? That... that sound? Boom... boom... Boom!" He smacked his hands on the table, causing the group to jump in their seats in fear. "That didn't come from the troglodytes. No, that... that came from something else." Carrie and the boys stared at Mike, awaiting whatever monster or mythical creature they had to fight.
