Getting ready was quite hectic for you weren't really amused by the whole dinner plans. But you had to look presentable. That meant pulling on a huge, frilly and puffy gown. Which you dreaded. Yet it couldn't be helped, so you made your way into your wardrobe with Diane following behind you.
There were quite a lot of dresses to choose from but you weren't very keen on wearing any of the big gowns you had. But it clearly wasn't your choice so you finally decided on one.
It was a long (f/c) silky gown that you owned. With a little bit of black lace embroidery and lace sticking out of the hands. It was more comfortable than most of your dresses. The fabric dragged at your feet making it a tad bit hard to walk through. But hopefully, you wouldn't have to do much walking.
After that Diane helped you fix your hair into a long braid. A dash of magic to make your hair the right length and you were set. Makeup was off the tables for you. You preferred not to prettify too much. So you were all set and then headed down to meet the suitor and his companions.
You were escorted through the halls by Diane and as you walked past numerous paintings of the few kings and queens before your mother. Most of them died tragic deaths, being slain by demons or chose just to leave the throne. If only you had the choice to leave as well.
At last, you entered the royal throne room where the suitor and his companions had come. You were introduced by Frederick, the royal butler. Then a man stepped forward and introduced this so-called suitor.
"Here today to court princess (y/n) (l/n) of heaven is Sir Gavin the third of Fletching household.", he said signalling to a tall young man beside him.
He had short blonde hair and hazel eyes. He wore a green jacket with golden embroidery on the rims and black pants. His wings were a bit larger than yours which meant he was a great flyer. His displayed a sort of cheeky smile on his face, a positive aura surrounding him. Obviously an oblivious one. He seemed quite pleased to be here, unlike you who would rather more just leave.
You'd heard that this family was of aristocratic status. Clearly, your mother wanted to win their trust to ensure her power be supreme over heaven.
After everyone was introduced and a quick word from your mother to woo the guests, you all recessed to the dining room. There you sat down opposite to Sir Gavin. He kept glancing at you every now and then with a big welcoming smile on his face as if to say he was pleased to court you. You just ignored the vexation you were feeling and gave him a soft fake smile.
The last thing you needed was your mother noticing you being vexed by the man and then have her lecture you all over again. So you kept your composure. A few more hours of this and it would be over for now. But you dreaded the thought of having to live with this man. True that he didn't seem like an awful person, but you knew well that your heart longed to be elsewhere. With him down in hell, yet it couldn't be and the truth left an aching pain in your chest.
You couldn't finish your food due to a strange nauseating feeling you had. So you finished early. Then came the little heart to heart chat you had to do with Sir Gavin. So you two were sent to the garden where you were left alone with him. An awkward silence filled the air for the first few minutes. You didn't bother speaking as you weren't amused by him anyways. He seemed tense being alone with you. You sensed he was worried, probably because he'd heard of how many a suitor had tried to win your heart and left unsuccessfully. This wasn't after all the first time your mother had tried to court you with a person. But the other times you had a reason to refuse a man. Now, all you had was a broken heart that hadn't the strength to fight any longer.
You sat there quietly on a bench in the garden as Gavin struggled to break the ice, and you weren't helping matters. Finally, you heard him take a deep breath and just blurt out the words.
"So, I heard you like to collect currencies...my hell and all, I mean.", Gavin spoke quite nervously.
You glanced at him a bit suspiciously. Not sure if you should respond to him or not. But you did anyway.
"Yes. It's a hobby that I take quite some delight in.", you said nonchalantly. Not looking making eye contact with him.
"W-well, I too collected them. It is indeed quite fun.", he said trying to sound cheery.
He then pulled out a little pouch from his pocket. Then digging his hands in it, he pulled out a few rustic coins. They seemed quite old to you, maybe ancient or vintage at the very least. You couldn't help yourself from cocking you head a bit to get a better view of them. Gavin noticed your attempts to see them and happily brought them closer for you to examine. But that only made you shrink in embarrassment.
"I got these from some exterminators. A couple of my friends sometimes find some for me because of my craze for them. If memory serves, these should be American.", he said with a light enthusiasm to his tone.
He then raised his hand with the coins in it to you. He signalled for you to take one for examination.
"Are you sure?", you asked him curiously. Your hands longed to grab one of them but it wasn't proper, so you had to control yourself.
"Yes, it's fine. You may take a look.", he said with a smile as he loosed up with you.
You nodded and carefully reached for a coin. There were many to choose from but for some reason, your hand went directly for a gold-tinted one. You held the chilly metal circle in your hand for a moment before flipping it over to see where it was from. It had the words "Louisiana Territory" embezzled on it. Seeing that you realised it was from your time and homeland. A quick and stinging pain suddenly filled your chest. It felt awful. You remembered how you used to like going down to hell to get these, and now? Now you neither liked hell nor heaven. All you wished was for some peace and freedom. Neither of which you clearly had.
Gavin noticed the sudden shift in your mood. That lost look in your eyes told him very well that you were in grief. He was an empathetic person. So he decided to try and comfort you.
"Is everything alright princess (y/n)? You seem a bit sad.", he looked at you and asked in a soft and gentle tone.
You weren't sure if it was a good idea to discuss your issues with him. But at the moment you were needy for consolation.
"No.", was all you said. You looked down at the little coin in your hand and felt your eyes fill up a bit, though you tried your best to hold the tears back.
"Would you care to share the matter with me? That is only if you don't mind.", he said.
"It's just, the man I loved betrayed me when I was alive. We lived in Louisiana and this coin reminded of him.", you said as you raised the coin to show it to Gavin.
"Oh my. That sounds terrible. What did he do?", he said with a gasp.
"H-he......murdered me.", you mumbled under your breath. The words were barely audible to Gavin.
"Murdered his own lover!? He must have been a cruel person.", he said with a tone of disapproval.
"Oh, he was cruel. But he was different to me.......or so I thought.", you said, holding back tears.
Gavin went quiet and into deep thought for a minute. Finally he spoke,"Now I don't mean to sound rude. But, how do you know it was he who killed you?"
That's when you realized that you didn't in fact, know for sure. Time seem to stop around you in that moment. To be honest the only proof you had of this information was your mother's words, and her words were never truly believable. You knew so. And to think you believed her so easily. why? Was it that little belief in you that you couldn't have a happily ever after, ever? Perhaps it was? Maybe your dark pasts were clouding your bright futures. But none of that mattered when you suddenly lost all conscious. You felt weak and light headed as you collapsed to the floor in front of you, near Gavin's feet. A few faded calls for help were the last thing you remembered from that night, the rest was just an abyss of darkness.
