Lapis pushed open the heavyset door to the top balcony of little home school, the sounds of a cool summer night seeping in. Ahead of her, Peridot was leaning over the edge with her arms crossed and one leg propped behind the other, gazing up at the cloudless sky and admiring the stars, the tips of her pointed visors glinting in the pale light. Lapis felt a twinge of remorse and she grabbed her right arm on her left hand, looking down and debating on whether or not to turn back inside. Her and Peridot hadn't exactly been alone together since they had taken Blue Diamond's ship to home world, and even then their conversation was forced and taut.

Lapis sighed. It had been years since she had abandoned her in her cowardly panic, and fled to the moon, but even now, every time they met eyes, it was the first thing she thought of.

And every time that gutting feeling of remorse hollowed her body.

Swallowing a lump in her throat, she strode forward. She placed both hands palms down on the rough surface of the balcony, standing up straight and mooning over the constellations, prickling with apprehension. Lapis glanced to her right at Peridot, and found herself staring into her deep green eyes. Her stomach leapt and she looked away quickly, mildly blushing, that painful essence still engulfing her.

Lapis let out an audible sigh, leaning down and copying Peridot's stance, crossing her arms and bending over, her mind writhing with things to say. She shot a glance far below her, at the quiet town beneath them. A few windows flickered with light while others were still, the depth of night taking hold. She hadn't expected it to be this peaceful.

Peridot was the first to break the silence. "Do you.. still think about it, too?" The small voice brought her back to reality. Lapis tipped her head to the right and looked at the little green gem. She looked miserable, and hadn't moved as she spoke, making Lapis instinctively know what she was talking about. Not knowing what to say, she gave a small, sorrowful nod, and a fresh wave of guilt washed upon her as she began drowning in those old, unwanted memories. Vile stirred inside her, and her thoughts grew grim as she grabbed the bridge of her nose, gritting her teeth and closing her eyes. A few seconds of silence passed before Lapis finally released her long overdue words.

"I just- I can't stop thinking about it every time I'm around you, and- and I feel awful!" She raised her voice and cried out, looking up at the soft, but bright white stars. "I hardly said anything to you after I came back, and I've just been ignoring what iv'e done. I never even thought about bringing it up; I didn't want to bring it up, you were so happy building with Bismuth and I didn't want to take anything away from you."

She paused.

"Again."

Tears brimmed in her eyes and her head throbbed. She felt feverish and fogged in negativity, and she knew that there was no escape until things were settled. Peridot had been looking at the ranting gem with wide eyes, a hurt expression still plastered on her face as she too tried to speak.

Finally, she answered. "You just.. left." Peridot whispered in a husky voice, standing tall and turning to her. "Did you even think about me? How I felt?" She wailed, putting a hand on her chest, her voice quivering as she stood in front of the taller blue gem. "All of our meep-morps, our Camp Pining Heart marathons, did none of those ever matter!?"

There was another stressed pause. "I thought.. I thought we had something.. special." She finished with a whimper, her voice finally giving away, standing defiantly and trying to hold herself together while she waited for an answer.

Lapis had stilled in her spot, mind swarming in hate, clasping one hand over her eyes as they bubbled over with hot tears and clenching her jaw. All those thoughts she had been refusing to face had been dug up, and were now swarming in her head, and suddenly, Peridot's pain became her own.

Sobs started to fill the silent void in the night.

Lapis cried for some time, unable to look at Peridot. It was just her cries that could be heard. Something slipped around Lapis' waist and gently squeezed her. She looked down to see Peridot with her arms around her, her head looking out over the sleeping town with cloudy eyes. Lapis looked down at her with her wide blue eyes, stunned and confused, but she had finally reached her limit of emotion, and she dramatically sank to her knees with Peridot, wrapping her arms under her shoulders and burying her face into her neck, crying even harder. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry..." Was all she could say, pulling Peridot closer to her as they held each other in the dead of night.

The two knelled in a messy embrace for some time, holding Lapis close to her chest and stroking her hair before she had finally worn herself out. Peridot pulled away, wiping tears of her own as she smiled. "I'm sorry I made you this.. emotional." She piped, crossing her legs and looking away. Lapis rubbed her sore eyes, shaking her head. "No, no, I didn't realize how much I needed this." She looked up, reflecting Peridot's grin. Peridot's gaze wandered their surroundings. "There's still some dark left, want to stargaze for a bit?" She asked, gesturing to the mystic sky with her thumb. Lapis nodded softly.

...

Both Peridot and Lapis had chosen to lean against the balcony wall, enjoying the beauty of the remaining night as the sky began to change colors while dawn wormed its way in, striking small talk over recent mishaps. Eventually, Peridot had slowly and timidly inched closer to Lapis until their shoulders were brushing, leaning against her with a drawn out, but pleased, sigh. Lapis had stiffened at first, but then smiled, gazing at her with affection. Now, the small green gem was sleeping, still propped up against Lapis with one arm linked with hers.

Lapis was finally at ease after everything had been discussed. She took her eyes away from the blending sky, and stole a glance at a still sleeping Peridot tucked close to her, and snuck a gentle kiss to her gem. Peridot squirmed with a muffled squeak and huddled closer to Lapis, settling with a content sigh and squeezing her arm. Lapis hadn't realized how much she missed her company and affection. She smiled, nuzzling Peridot's cheek before she looked back up. Suddenly, she felt her own eyes begin to droop, and suddenly, the sky blurred together in a fuzzy pink and orange haze as she drifted off into a lulled sleep of her own.
