Peridot watched as the crystal gems walked off into the distance before nervously moving her eyes to where Lapis stood. She looked emotionless, and if anything, aggravated as she waved goodbye to Steven and the gems. She switched back and started to head towards the barn, casting a brittle glance at Peridot as she drew near. Intimidated, she stepped out of the way and let her pass.

Lapis rolled her eyes and removed her baseball cap, plopping it onto Peridot's pointed yellow hair with an inaudible grumble. Peridot muttered back and took it off, staring at it for a few. This was going to take some time.

...

About two weeks had passed since the roaming eye filled with rubies had come to earth in search of Jasper. Very little progress was made between the green and blue roommates. Peridot just kept her distance, and with nothing else to do, watched Camp Pining Hearts on loop. Lapis, on the other hand, hardly ever acknowledge her. She'd either bask on the barn's roof or nap in the hammock. Peridot didn't mind, although it was starting to get lonely on her own.

The night rolled around at last, and Peridot was still occupied with the same episode of CPH. She lounged on the tattered couch, eagerly watching the flashes of the screen as the episode played over. Lazuli still didn't really talk to her, and Peridot had tried to be as respectful as possible in terms of distance, and to her luck, she hadn't crossed any boundaries of hers; Yet. She didn't want to pester the blue gem any further than she already had, so she left her alone.

Suddenly, there was a soft swish sound, and Peridot turned to see that Lapis had sat on the opposite side of the couch she was on. She had one elbow propped on the arm, leaning heavily into her palm. Her eyes said nothing, but Peridot was sure she could pick of a dim look of wonder as she too watched the show. Peridot fumbled with words to say, not wanting to be awkward. Had she finally decided to trust her?

"Aye, Lazuli.." She said nervously, sweating as she furiously scratched the back of her head. "Hey." She responded, still not looking her way. Peridot clasped her hands together and fiddled with her thumbs, biting her lip.

"What's this?" Lapis asked, gesturing to the tv. Peridot piped up instantly, spilling into small talk.

"Oh! It's a tv, and you can play videos on it. It's a form of human entertainment." She finished, grinning as she waited for her response.

She didn't say anything for a bit, just stared and frowned in confusion. "Mind if I watch some?" Lapis finally asked, looking over to Peridot for the first time since she'd sat down. She had a calm, relaxed expression on her gentle face, one that Peridot had never seen. She simply shrugged. "I don't mind. It gets lonely watching it by myself anyway."

...

A couple of CHP episodes went by, and Lapis seemed to enjoy them all. She had definitely perked up, asking to watch more and seemingly interested. They talked for some time too, warming up at last and happy to have the blue gem's remote trust. Eventually, after hours worth of interludes, the water gem decided to call it quits, flying off to her isolated area.

Lapis had went into her hammock for the night, leaving Peridot alone to binge more CPH. She smiled, happy to have gotten some progress done; even if it was hardly any. Friendship really was a complicated process.

Eventually, she began to get tired herself, yawning loudly as she switched the tv off with the remote and sank into the cushions. She stared through the hole in the barn roof, admiring the stars as they glimmered above, playfully mapping them together into shapes. The moon beamed down brightly, emitting a perfect, comforting silver light. At ease and with a final yawn, she let herself fall asleep.

...

Peridot awoke with start, a strange feeling of unprovoked dread washing over her. She was no longer in the comfort of the barn, but in a blank, cold black abyss with no end. She was sitting on a shallow, watery floor that rippled at her movements, and displayed a distorted reflection of her when she looked down. Feeling shaken, she called out the only name that could possibly be near by.

"Lapis?" She whispered, longing for the gem to respond.

With no answer, Peridot got to her knees, looking around with sharp wild eyes and a pale, fear stricken face. Eventually, her eyes settled on a distant blue figure; it was Lapis.

The water gem was facing away from her, a strange, non existent wind seemed to be tugging at her skirt and hair. "Lapis?" She shouted again, scrambling from the ground as she began to run over to her.

Not even a few steps in, a burst chains lept up from the ground and wrapped tightly around both of her wrists and ankles, stopping her instantly.

"Huh?-Lapis?!" Peridot said again with a stronger hint of worry in her taught voice, confused and growing scared by the second. She desperately tried fighting her restraints, but to no avail, they didn't budge, and only gripped tighter as they began to drag her down to the sleek floor.

Peridot was forced to her knees as multicolored bright lights flickered across her vision. Violently shaking her head to rid the strange flares, she looked up to see Lapis looming over her with a cold, hostile gaze and ghostly white eyes. Helpless, Peridot cowered beneath her, grimacing fearfully as she started demanding answers. "Lapis? What are you doing? Let me go this instant!" She hissed, now more frustrated with her behavior than intimidated. Yet again, there was no answer, only a sinister and bitter smirk as Lapis raised one hand up.

With that, Peridot's liquid bindings began to retract backwards, dragging her across the slick watery floor on her stomach. With a shriek, she reached both hands out to scrabble for a grip, but found nothing. She attempted to stand, but the chains just yanked harder and sent her splashing to the ground. She groaned and spat water from her mouth, coughing.

Something began distantly roaring behind her, growing close as she was taken back. She looked back to see a whirling, yawning hole, funneling with bubbly white foam and dark, icy blue water. With a gasping cry, she turned back forward and tried to gain grip again, but it was no use.

"No, nonononono!"

With a finale scream, she was sent over the edge in a free fall, her sight growing warped and blurry. Then, there was nothing but a strange, fizzling energy in her body that slowly ebbed at her form.

...

"Peridot? Peridot, you're dreaming!"

Peridot jumped up with a gasp, face to face with Lapis Lazuli as she gazed at her in complete concern. Still paranoid, she shrieked and kicked her way backwards and fell off the couch. She hit the ground with a thump, sitting up immediately. Lapis hurriedly reached out to her, looking just as alarmed as she was. Peridot flinched, and with no other option, held both of her hands out in front of her, her only strategy of defense.

"Wait! Don't-"

She was suddenly swept into a warm embrace with Lapis, the gentle water gem holding her close and stroking her back. Befuddled and still breathing heavy, she contemplated before returning the hug, letting out a strained sigh as she propped her head over Lapis' shoulder, leaning against her with a small sniffle.

"You projected your dreams. I didn't know I was that scary to you, I'm sorry." Lapis soothed. Peridot tightened her grip, clawing at Lapis' back with tears in her eyes, upset that the dream had framed Lapis of hostility. She finally pulled back with her hands still on the little gem's shoulders, gazing at her firmly, a worn and solemn look plastered on her face. She raised a hand to smear the remaining residue of tears from Peridot's tired eyes before looking down with a blush.

"You gonna be ok?" She smiled, ruffling Peridot's hair playfully. She swatted her hands away, answering.

"Heh, yeah. Just a nightmare."

AN: I'm tempted to make a sequel, but vice versa and with Lapis dreaming of harming Peridot. Any thoughts?
