The day had grown rather gloomy with time. Both Lapis and Peridot sat inside little homeschool's walls on the seventh floor, each doing their own thing, with Peridot tinkering with one of her many machines and Lapis creating a new sculpture for her meep-morp collection. It was silent, peaceful, and overall a nice afternoon to be lounging in doors. It wasn't until the strange shaking and growling that the duo began to grow concerned.
"Did ya hear that?" Peridot asked Lapis, turning to face the busy blue gem. "Yeah. Probably just a thunderstorm." She answered, mindlessly turning back to her work. "..Thunderstorms don't growl." She muttered, looking out of the window in front of her. The sky was still dark and daunting, but there wasn't any sign of rain or lightening. With a simple shrug, she brushed it off, returning to her work as she began picking at a stray red wire. Another roar of sound shook the ground, and this time Peridot was certain that something was up.
With a huff, she got to her feet and walked up to the window, pressing her face against it as she scanned the area. She was greeted by a strange and distant towering pink figure with menacing, black, diamond pink eyes. They had many horns placed along their head and mouth, complete with long talons and an under bite. She squeaked with surprise, hurriedly scampering over to Lapis and shaking her roughly by the shoulder. "Lazuli, there's something outside, I think it's a corrupted gem." She worried, biting her lower lip as the once relaxed blue gem got to her feet, frowning. "But- I thought all the corrupted gems were dealt with.." She trailed in speech, walking over to the window to see for herself.
She let out a small gasp, hurriedly rushing over to Peridot and grabbing her firmly by the wrist. "Peri, we need to go-" She said with a pant, tugging her towards the steps. "Wha-" She began, but was cut short when the building began to tremble again, this time more violently. "Come on!" She urged, taking off without warning and dragging the small technician behind her, causing her to stumble immensely. Peridot was confused. Corrupted gems weren't like this; not the kind to attack unprovoked. Suddenly, something large and pink slammed through the wall, busting it in with a bam and creating an explosion of debris. The two ducked, narrowly missing a large chunk of building that soared over their heads. "Eek!" Peridot shouted, picking up her pace as Lapis ran faster down the spiraling steps, finally on the fourth floor and set for the entrance. There was another ruthless roar of fury from outside, and something else lashed in through the wall. A tail?
The spiked tail bashed through the room entirely, slicing it completely in half as the roof began to crumble and fall into large chunks to the ground. Another close call as a large half of the roof crashed to the ground, landing only a few inches away from the escaping gems as they continued to rush down the stairs. "Who is that?!" Peridot shouted with worry, still doing her best to keep up with the much faster water gem, trying not to trip over fallen objects. "I don't know," she answered with a sharp breath, "but we gotta get to the others to stop it before it does any more damage."
As if on queue, little home school lurched heavily to one side, sending both Peridot and Lapis tumbling to the floor as they lost footing, distancing a good amount. "Guh-" Lapis winced, rubbing the bridge of her nose before shaking her head clear, standing up and gesturing for Peridot to follow again. "We're almost there, we just gotta go a few-"
Lapis was cut short again as another large paw blew through the wall, although this time heading directly at Peridot. She had no time to react, and instead was swept off her feet as the massive talon flung her to the opposite side of the room. She hit the wall with a sickening crunch, slumping to the ground, unconscious. "Peri!" Lapis cried out, racing over to the gem as more rubble began to cover her limp form. She reached her side immediately, panicking as she tried to shove away the large slabs of stone that pinned her down. Her sandals scrabbled the ground as she struggled to move one of the large objects, grunting as she used as much force as possible. To her avail, it finally slid off with a thunk, and Lapis was able to safely reach Peridot. She grabbed the little gem and gently tugged her out from beneath the rest of the debris, examining her thoroughly with a terrified expression.
Her breath hitched when she noticed the fine lines of cracks on her triangular gemstone, her visors chipped and scuff marks covering her body. Looking around with wild eyes, Lapis scooped up Peridot into her arms, keeping her close as she raced down the steps once more. The destruction was worsening by the minute, more large chunks of building falling to the ground as the strange beast tore at the outer shell. "Stars-" Lapis cursed, noticing the sharp claws of plum pink flames creep up the walls. "There's no time!" She thought with panic as the building began to cave in on itself, darting out of the way from another stray block of stone. With no other option, she hunkered down to the ground and summoned her water wings, wrapping them tightly around her and Peridot as the floor gave away beneath them, resulting in a void of darkness as the world ebbed away.
...
Lapis groggily opened her eyes, nails of pain jabbing her limbs as she struggled to sit up. A mess of structure and objects had buried her and Peridot a good ways beneath the surface, but thanks to Lapis' water wings, the two were unharmed from the fall. Lapis looked at the motionless gem she was still cradling, wincing as more cracks spread from her gem. She had to get her to Steven, and fast. With a surge, she stood up with Peridot in one arm, shoving at the rubble trapping them. It creaked and groaned at her efforts, but to no avail, stayed put.
"Great, we're stuck." She grumbled in her mind, flashing her gaze from above her to Peridot. She was slowly growing tired, the strain of using her water wings as a bubble becoming more burdensome by the minute, but she couldn't give in; she had to protect Peridot. She slouched back, looking up miserably with weary eyes. Would they even be found?
"Lapis?! Peridot?!"
Lapis' face upturned into a smile of hope as she heard the familiar booming voice. "Bismuth, we're down here!"
After a series of shuffling and clanking, the large but gentle gem had scrapped a tunnel to the trapped duo in matter of minutes. Exhausted, Lapis finally retracted her water wings with a sigh, reaching up to Bismuth's offering hand to help her out. "Woah! What happened to Tiny?!" She shrieked, pointing to the knocked out gem. Lapis struggled to speak in between tired breaths. "S-she cracked her gem, we need to get her to Steven."
Bismuth looked torn for a moment, fiddling with her hands as she looked for the right words. At last, she managed a lie. "Right. Let's go." She gestured for her to follow as she began to walk off to the nearest warp pad. Lapis started to follow, unfurling her water wings and fluttering in the air to avoid tripping. She looked down at Peridot, who still hadn't budged since she was hit unconscious. "Just hang in there.." She murmured with worry, hoping the little green gem could hear her. After all, Steven could heal her.
Right?
