Chapter 27: Cat out of the bag Pt. 1

Steve's POV

Have you ever worked as babysitters in your life? Well I did that day, and it was the hardest job I ever had to do. I was still feeling suspicious about Jill's habits these days, so I decided to take her to work with me that afternoon. All we had to do was to find this college girl to ask her some questions, and a sorority house didn't seem like a hostile environment to bring my sister.

On the other hand, we had a similar yet more serious situation. Danny's nephew Eric had arrived this morning and, while I didn't think it was possible, he needed more surveillance than my 13 years old sister. My partner's face screamed he wasn't in the mood for this, but we were left with not much of a choice. They both were coming with us.

At first I found Eric's presence quite simpatic and funny, especially when he dusted off an old imagine of his uncle posing as Mr. November 1998 in the Neward police. Needless to say Danny did not appreciate the gesture or the fact that he sent it to the entire police department. This was his work place, and Eric was simply not taking it seriously. This of course caused for Danny to lose his temper on the kid in the middle of the office, so his nephew ended up sulking all the way to the college building we were looking for while Jill was contently texting on her phone, not paying anyone any attention just to make her point across she was not happy with being dragged into this.

We were going to kill two birds with one stone. We were convinced the killer was among the student collective, weather it was one of the cheaters the teacher had been confronted about or the confronter herself: one of his A students, that had become raging to the permissive teacher.

"Alright, let's go for the cheaters first. How do we find these guys?" I asked my partner while keeping my eyes on the road but, before he could reply, somebody else beat him to it.

"You should check for the students that made a 100% improvement on the last semester. Those for sure cheat" Eric commented while texting on his phone on the back of the car, my sister Jill in the same situation right next to him.

"Not a bad idea" I said before taking a good look at my partner and thought I should better keep my thoughts to myself.

"We cannot base on that. We have to catch them during the act" Danny said instantly dismissing Eric's idea, but he did not give up. What can I say, they kid seemed to know about this.

"You know there's only a few items you can have with you during a test" my partner's nephew continued with his explanation, even when it would more likely fall into the deaf ears of his uncle. "One of them is drinks. You can like take a can of soda and replace the nutritional label for the test's answers. Nobody will ever check on that"

"We could check on that" I agreed with him, thinking it sounded plausible at least. Of course I had to dodge Danny's killer look barely the words left my mouth, but I didn't regret it. We needed to interrogate our suspects.

"Thanks for the tip" Jill mumbled to Eric and froze in her spot when she caught me staring at her through the review. If she ever cheats on school, she's gonna hear it from me. Loud and clear.

As we arrived at the grounds of the prestigious university, I contemplated weather Jill and Eric were safer inside the car or with us. I didn't think anything bad could happen to them in school grounds, and the chances of them doing something to spoil this investigation was very high.

"Alright. You stay in the car" I said referring to the younger people in the vehicle and got out before my sister could protest. I didn't miss her sulking and folding her arms on her chest, and I couldn't help but to roll my eyes to her gesture.

"And where are you going?" Danny talked to his nephew who chose to disregard my previous directive and was staring at us expectantly.

"I can help" Eric said and before anyone could say anything the other car door opened.
