Steve's POV
Whenever my sister was at school I had a sense of relief because she was protected there, but I should have learned by then that wasn't entirely true. That day I had all my focus on finally catching this bastard Wo Fat to bring him to justice. My girlfriend Cath had gathered up interesting information, intel only she could have provided. I kept telling her she was a very valuable asset to the team but she always seemed to be thinking of wandering off somewhere else. I didn't mind, I just wanted her to be happy.
"Steve. Got a minute?" she smiled gently at me from her spot only half way through the door. I signaled her to come in and she did, shutting the door behind her.
"Something tells me it's not good news" I anticipated her move, scanning her body language. As much as she knew me, I knew her, and I was also good in reading people's bodies.
"I had a job offer. For the USS Enterprise. My... my ex boyfriend contacted me for it" she made sure to include that last detail, since it wasn't a minor thing for me.
Of course I knew him. We had been in the Navy together and I had always thought he wasn't a good person. Many had said I only felt that way because I was in love with Cath, but the feeling remained to this day. "I see" I replied to let her know I had received the information.
"I thought you'd be happy for me" she spoke to me, not clueless about my reaction but reprimanding me for it.
"I am Cath, but it's just so hard to keep track of you. One day you want one thing, the other you don't..." I let her know exactly how I felt about her recently. It was impossible to retain her in one spot for long.
"What is that supposed to mean?" she furrowed her eyebrows towards me.
"Aren't you happy here? Working with me, with 5-0?" I couldn't help but ask her. She seemed like it but her actions said otherwise.
"Yes but..." she started to excuse herself but I cut her off. "Then why change? Why do you always need to change? The next thing I know, you'll be running off somewhere else" I ranted in frustration with my girlfriend and my current relationship. It's not something I wanted anymore.
When we were young, we had the world at our feet. We'd travel, take a bunch of missions, risk our lives... but now I was looking for something else. I wanted stability.
"You don't understand! Here you're the leader, everyone looks up to you. I need to feel useful" she raised her tone, giving away she was as frustrated as I was.
The room was heating up quick, so we barely noticed my phone was ringing until the third time it did. When I saw the screen I gave it a strange look.
"McGarrett" I replied a bit unsure. I didn't know this number so I was clueless as to who it was and how they contacted me. I recognized Zeth's voice immediately, but what had me panicking were the words he was speaking. Cath's eyes widened when she realized it was really bad news.
My sister was lost in a storm, in the middle of the ocean,
"No, Fred! Don't go anywhere" the boy warned his friend before returning to me again. "She left a while ago. We can't see her anymore and the waves are huge" he explained the situation like any freaking out 14 years old would and I knew I couldn't waste anymore time.
"Stay on the shore. I'm on my way" I instructed before hanging up the phone. My feet were already leading me to the exit as I elaborated a quick plan in my head. "Kono, I need the helicopter right now and coordinates of this call" I said while handing her my personal phone, alerting my friend Danny something was wrong.
And he knew the only person I could get this worked up.
Kono delivered the coordinates and the helicopter was waiting for me on the roof as I had instructed. Danny was hot on my heels and had insisted on coming with me, just to make sure I don't do something too stupid like always. I'd do whatever to bring her back home.
