listening to a sad song
while reading

「。。。」

"Um-Hey, Hi, David. It's-uh-Simon."

There was a short, static-filled silence.

"Look, I didn't mean to lash out on you. It was a reflex. You kind of took me quite by surprise with your...question."

The phone was rapidly dropped away from Simon's mouth as he cursed out loud.

"Fuck, David. Yes, I like you, too. A lot. I-I'd love to go out sometime."

Silence. The quick breaths of Simon's could be heard hitting the microphone.

"I like you, too. Please pick up."

「。」

"Hey. It's Simon. You're probably asleep."

He chuckled lightly.

"You're probably even snoring. Maybe drooling. But...I just-just couldn't help myself."

From the other side, Simon sniffled lightly.

"I can't believe that you're finally mine, Dave. That swallowing my pride those many years ago was worth it."

Simon's heavy sigh sent a soft woosh of air on the speaker.

"I'm willing to risk it all if it's for you. For my boyfriend."

"I-I love you."

「。」

"Morning, baby. I can't wait to see you walk down the aisle."

Simon's smile was heard through his voice. Fond and emotional.

"I can't wait to put that ring on your finger."

"For our first dance."

"And then for my dick inside of you."

A loud laugh.

"And to call you a Cowell."

"I'll see you in a couple hours, darling."

Simon smooches through the phone.

「。」

"ERIC! Get off of the table! It's not for standing! And where the heck is Alfred?"

A child's giggle and foot steps could be heard tampering away. Simon huffed in obvious annoyance.

"Oh, shit. Hey, Davie. I just wanted to make sure how you're doing."

There was a clank of a pot and then water turning on.

"I got the kids already, so don't worry about it. Call me back when you can. Or I'll wait for you to come home."

From far away—and above Simon's threat— came two other voices.

"Is that Daddy?"

"Yes, want to say something?"

"Hi, Daddy! Come home, we miss you!"

Eric and Alfred giggled.

"You heard them, babe."

"Come home."

「。」

There was only a small, choked sob.

"Davie. Shit, this is so stupid."

Simon's voice was deep, accent heavy.

"I was-was looking through our photo albums. And—"

A mix of a laugh and a cry of sorrow.

"It just reminded me of how much I love you."

"And how much I miss you."

Simon shamelessly cried into the phone.

"You won't ever hear this. But I know it's because you're in a better place."

"Bye, my David."
