∞ Cassie's House, Night ∞
Dean knocked on the door and opened it, finding Cassie doing something on the desk in the lounge.
"Dean!" said Cassie once she looked up.
"Hey"
"Hey. Come on in" invited Cassie.
Dean walked in and closed the door behind him, "So..." He started as he looked at the papers on the desk "you busy, or..."
"The paper's doing a tribute to Jimmy" explained Cassie "I was just going through his stuff...his awards. Trying to find words*
"That's gotta be tough"
"For years this family owned the paper. The Dorians? They had a whites only policy. After they sold it, Jimmy became the first black reporter. He didn't stop til he became editor. He taught me everything... " Cassie drifted off " Where're your brothers?" she asked.
Dean shrugged, "Not here"
"All right. So, uh, what brings you here?" asked Cassie
"Trying to find the connection between the three victims. By the way, did you talk to your mum about, what Todd said about not being a racist? " asked Dean
" I did, she didn't want to talk about it"
" Right"
Silence filled the room
" So" started Dean breaking the silence "just then, why did you ask where my brothers were?"
" Nothing. Not Important"
" Could it be because, without them here it's just you and me? Not you, me, Ethan and Sam which would be easier? "
" It's not easier... Look, I... " she trailed off
Dean looked away," No. Forget it. It's fine. We'll keep it strictly business"
Cassie stared at him, "I forgot you do that"
Dean looked at her, " Do what? "
" Oh. Whenever we get, what's the word... close? Anywhere in the neighborhood of emotional vulnerability, you back off. Or make some joke. Or find anyway to shut the door on me"
Dean barked out a laugh and walked closer to her, " Oh that's hilarious. See, I'm not the one who took that big final door and slammed it behind me"
"Ok wait a minute..."
" And I'm not the one who took the key and buried it" added Dean
" We done with this metaphor?"
" Alls I'm saying is, I was totally up front with you back then, and you nailed me for it"
" The guy I'm with, the guy I'm hoping might be in my future, tells me he professionally pops ghosts"
" That's not the words I used! " countered Dean.
" And that he has to leave, to go work with his father"
"I did!"
" All I could think was, if you want out fine, but don't tell me this insane story"
" It was the truth Cassie" said Dean, raising his voice while getting closer to Cassie's face, " and I notice it didn't sound insane the minute you thought I could help you"
" Well back then I thought you just wanted to dump me"
" Whoa! Now let's not forget who dumped who, ok? "
" I thought it was what you wanted" reasoned Cassie
" Well it wasn't"
" I didn't mean to hurt you"
