Payton’s house was in view when my legs buckled beneath me and I hit the ground. Kelsey fell beside me, gasping.

“Nearly there.” she whispered. "So close. You can do it."

“I can’t.” I breathed in. “Move.” And out.

“HELLO?” Kelsey screamed. “SOMEBODY HELP!”

I watched as she touched a hand to my forehead but I couldn’t feel it. She sighed sadly and dropped her arm.

“You’re cold.” she whispered, her head fell gently onto her arm on the ground. “But you’re sweating.”

“Hey.” In. “You don’t.” Out and In. “Looks so good.” Breathe. “Either.” I told her.

She laughed gently.

“Kelsey?” I heard an urgent voice- I think Taylor’s- call. The sound of hurried footsteps approached us and a pair of mud splattered boots came into my sight. “Oh my God. What happened?”

“Just help her.” Kelsey exclaimed. My vision went dark again but I was vaguely aware of what was happening around me. "She's dying."

“Over here!” Taylor’s voice called. More footsteps. A few curses. Ruth‘s voice louder than the other girls'.

“Quick, clear the table inside.” I think it was Payton who barked out the order and I heard footsteps fade away in the distance. “Ruth and Taylor, help Kelsey get inside. Lie her on the couch, clean and bandage any injuries and get her something to drink.

"Ok."

"Stay alive Jade." Kelsey called softly.

Someone must’ve picked me up. I couldn’t feel their arms holding me but my legs swung slightly with each step. This happened for about half a minute before  a door slammed and the swinging stopped. I must've been on the table.

“Ok.” Payton muttered. “Calm down everyone.” Someone clapped their hands beside my ear. “Jade? Can you hear me?”

I tried to speak but all that came out was a moan.

“Alright. A bit of a response is good. Hang in there.” he told me. “Can you feel this? Groan if you can. Say nothing if you can’t…. alright. This?”

Nothing happened as he kept repeating “this” over and over until his hand brushed against the knife handle which stuck out from my collarbone. Unbearable pain shot through my body and I screamed.

“Ok. That needs to come out. Ellen grab a damp cloth to cover the wound when I take the knife out. Make sure you apply plenty of pressure to try and stop the bleeding. Bethany find some bandages….Ok ready?” Pause. “Alright, Jade this will hurt. Stay still. I’m sorry but it has to come out. Stay strong.”

He tugged at the knife. I screamed. I wanted to pull away but my muscles wouldn’t work. The pain got worse and worse as I screamed louder and louder until it got so bad that my mind shut down and suddenly I wasn’t aware of anything.
