ZavianMarius and I managed to calm the boy enough to sleep. We had bathed him much to the boys whimpering and crying. We had arrived at the inn and the knights had been gone, probably searching and reporting to lord Greene.
We fed him as much as he could take and I had the inn manager organise a physician who came on the afternoon. Confirming that the boy had a broken rib and a dislocated shoulder. He provided the care of medication for the boys fever and putting the kids shoulder correctly so it could heal. He was bandaged up and asleep by the time he left.
Marius watched the child sleep with furrowed brows.
"They still hunt us." He murmured and I stood beside his seated form, reaching for him I ran my hand through his hair, a habit I needed to shake.
"The few who exist really aren't safe." He turned to look at me then and sighed.
"Griselda was right..." I crouched beside him then. "Whatever that trap was...it nearly succeeded." I pursed my lips tempted to go back, to get answers from that woman.
"What happened?" I gripped his hand looking up at his conflicted and confused face.
"It was like...something was pulling me. Like," he tilted his head and touched his chest. "My chest was being sat on and I was being pulled at the same time." He shook his head. "I thought I'd never stop feeling it. And my skin," his thumb ran over the back of my hand. "Was so cold, I felt like ice inside, my skin crawling with it." He shivered.
"I'm really sorry, I had no idea." I felt guilt edging into my heart and he cupped my cheek.
"You couldn't have known," we stared into each others eyes. "We were warned of a trap and I stopped you from wondering about it. It was careless of me."
"You couldn't have know it was that deep."
He chuckled and shook his head. We stayed for a moment, just gazing.
"What are we going to do about him?" Marius looked away first, his cheeks blazing and I grinned.
"She said to get him to the Borrower. I don't know who that is but, I'm going back there," his head snapped towards me. "Just to talk, she knows something and I need to know. Maybe she'll have an idea about this borrower."
"You can't go alone."
"And you can't come with me." I smiled and he rolled his eyes with a pout. "Watch him, I'll be quick."
"If you don't come back in three hours I'm coming." I patted his hand on my wrist and nodded.
It seemed almost deserted, the ground was still as black as sot. The houses near by had their doors closed and it was extremely hot with the sun above us, I squinted in the heat.
"You do not like to listen." I turned clutching my chest as my heart skipped and I jumped.
"You-" I panted and sighed closing my eyes briefly. "You scared me." She smirked at me.
"Why is the prince here?"
"I didn't-" I pursed my lips and shook my head. "Last night. What was that?"
