L I S A
Time, it's slow when we want it to be fast. It's fast when we want it to be slow.
My hands were shaking as we stood outside the ICU. Jennie, Chaeyoung, Jin, Seunghyun, and Dara were sitting on the benches clutching each other, looking frozen, except for Seunghyun, who was trying, but failing, not to look scared, which was somehow scarier. Seulgi was pacing back and forth while Joohyun and I stood near the double doors as we held each other.
It's the first time Jisoo temporarily died, and it happened at a not-so-convenient time. Yuri explained that; Jisoo's been pretty thrashed coming off radiation treatments, and they'd put her through chemo, sickening more than usual. It made her throw up so much these past days, making her esophagus rupture and start bleeding as she weakly puked blood.
Due to a lot of blood cancers, including Jisoo's bleeding, it isn't good. Jisoo's blood is inconsistent that it doesn't clot. Once it starts pouring out, it won't stop.
Soon after, the ICU got crowded with scrubs. Jisoo's vital signs crashed, and she stopped breathing, which caused her heart to stop. At this point, we are told not to get inside. Because knowing Dara, she would have blasted through those doors if Seunghyun and Seokjin weren't holding her back just a few minutes ago.
"Jo-Joohyun, I need to see her," I said, slowly pulling away from her arms. I need to see her. I need to be there to know if she'll be fine.
Joohyun wanted to argue, but when she saw me. She knew she had to do something. So she carefully guarded both hallways while I tried to sneak inside.
"Lis-," I heard Dara's voice, but I didn't look back as I went inside the room where Jisoo was. I was sure she wouldn't get me with the help of Joohyun. I slid into the corner and shakily watched the scene in front of me as it ramped up my anxiety.
The nurses and doctor worked seriously with Jisoo, which reassured me that everything was under control. A nurse did Jisoo's breathing for her, holding a plastic balloon to Jisoo's face called hand-bagging. The nurse squeezed it to force air into Jisoo's lungs. At the same time, Another nurse next to the bed mashed on Jisoo's chest to keep her blood flowing. The third nurse was also watching the red LED readout on the monitor.
At short breaks, the second nurse would stop mashing and say, "No pulse, no breathing."
No
"No pulse,"
Please, Jisoo. Come back. Please. I'm here now. Come back.
Yuri spotted me, and her eyes softened at how completely messed up I was. "Lisa, you don't have to see this,"
I moved as she came over. I dodged her long arms as she tried to push me out. "I'm staying," I sternly replied and averted my eyes to Jisoo.
"I'll explain what'll happen," Yuri's voice was quiet, like how you talk to an animal you don't want to frighten. She talked me through the rest of the drama. They gave Jisoo drugs to sedate her; and partly paralyze her so they could "intubate" her, which is sticking a plastic hose down her throat into her lungs to have a machine breathe for her. Once they had that going, they'd shock her heart to restart it.
Someone yelled. "Clear!" and slammed electricity through the paddles. Jisoo bounced up from the bed and went back down.
