I slam my hands down on the envy teacher's desk and stare furiously into his chocolatey eyes, "Mr Caville I will not stand for this. I demand you change it."
Allow me to explain. It is Wednesday, the third day of year eleven and my world has already ended. Not only do I want to slaughter a village full of innocents, but I want to murder a certain student too. I feel my blood boil and my temperature spike as my fists close, staring at Mr Caville only angers me further like adding gasoline to a fire pit.
Mr Caville is a black, tall and muscled teacher who is quick-tongued and charmingly humble. For an envy demon. He's usually a student's favourite due to his smart remarks or carefree attitude, however an action as severe as this instantly makes me despise his very being. Almost enough for me to want to turn him to ash.
"Change what Miss Green?" He asks with a sigh, removing his glasses and placing down his green pen he was marking papers with.
"My partner," I spit. "You are well aware of the hatred I have for Felix Fernsby, I cannot pair up with him for this task. It's simply absurd. I would rather gouge out my eyes with a crackhead's rusty spoon and juggle them in front of The Devil before I work with him."
"Olivia," Mr Caville raises his brows. "You're overreacting."
"Come on Liv," Felix throws an arm around me and my stomach rolls from his contact alone. "We'll do great."
"Get your filthy, cum-stained hands off of me," I hiss, eyes flashing with utter revulsion.
"Miss Green, I understand your frustrations, however this is a simple project which should take only a couple of weeks. I'm sure you can tolerate-"
"I tolerate everyone sir," I say stiffly. "Literally everyone. I simply cannot name someone I actually fully like. So when I tell you I dislike someone, I mean I dislike someone."
"We all have to make compromises, it is a part of life Miss Green. I suggest you take this as a learning challenge since you find my class so easy, you can test your patience and learn how to cope with those you despise.
"Plus, both of your parents actually asked me to do this. Here is the letter if you'd like proof," he magically finds the letter amongst his cluttered, disorganised, untidy desk that I'm surprised he actually knows where it is.
I snatch the paper from him, but with the green stamp adorning the signature snake embellishment, I know it's mother's doing:
'Dear Mr Caville,
It has come to our attention that Olivia Green and Felix Fernsby have a tense, unfriendly relationship that we wish to fix.
It is important that they develop a positive, tolerable connection due to their future duties as the queen and her head councilman.
We would like to propose that with any projects, you do what is in your power to set them as partners; we wish this only in your class in hopes that they bond over their passion for Poisons, this trait they get from their parents.
Furthermore, if their are any complications or disagreements, we give you permission to show them this letter as evidence that what you are doing is orders and that they should do this for Olivia's future kingdom.
Sincerely,
Your Queen, Richard Fernsby'
Now I feel even more sickly, the fact my own mother actually set me up to fail is horrifying. Yet not surprising. I should be used to her slimy scheming, I was raised with it after all. Nothing she did was for the sake of it, there was always something in it for her. The toxic, tormenting, testing nature of my mother is one that only a few can tolerate; otherwise they break. Countless occasions she has angered Wrath, we've had to replace the grande double doors sixteen times so far. Counting.
"Well," I crumple the paper up in my hand and look at Felix with a clenched jaw. "I guess we're... partners."
"Yay," he grins widely. "I can't wait to get my old bestie back!"
His whining causes a ring in my ear that I can't describe, it must be my Felix-allergy kicking in. I grip my bag strap tighter than usually, trying to not jab him in the throat. However that would mean touching him- how calamitous.
I twist and go to my usual lab station, as normal placing my belongings in the deep drawer before shutting it. Admittedly I did use more force than required.
"Students," Mr Caville smiles once everyone is to their assigned partners. "Today is the day we begin a new project. Of course last year was theory based, meanwhile in year eleven you'll be putting what you have learnt to the test. I want you to concoct a poison that suits you and your partner's personalities.
"You'll be given this lesson and Monday's as well to complete your assignment. This will also give you an opportunity to get to know your partner; a bonus task for those who want to win is to tell the class three positive facts about your partner."
"What's the prize?"
"I guess you guys will find that out on Monday," Mr Caville smiles. "How about you guys start off with listing off your individual characteristics that could be conveyed into a poison?"
Instantly everyone puts pencil to paper, muttering to one another about their thoughts and whatever the hell they want to do. Morons.
"So partner," Felix smirks and looks me up and down. "Aren't you ready to make the most toxic poison ever?"
I quirk my brow, "Toxic?"
He chuckles, "Don't kid yourself, we both know that you're the most toxic student in Blasphemy High. As well as the hottest."
"Why thank you," I fein a smile. "And we both know you're the most irritating student in Blasphemy High, don't kid yourself either."
"So? We've got irritating, toxicity, I suggest we make it smell and appear delicious due to our incredibly good looks, meanwhile adding other things."
He's as hot as roadkill. "Such as?"
"More personal, tiny details," he begins, this time slightly more serious. "We're only going to win if we've put thought into it, we can't just add toxic plants and irritating agents into a cocktail and hope for the best."
"I hate to say this," I bite my tongue and roll my eyes. "But you're truly right. We need to actually put thought into this and strategise about which ingredients we want to use and why. Think of the plant origins, where they're found and which conditions they grow."
"Right," he nods. "We could also try and incorporate different qualities as well, such as changing the victim's behaviours. We are both popular, how do others act around us?"
"Either scared or they try too hard."
"I like that," he nods. "We could include a hallucinogen that triggers people's biggest fears and explain how it relates back to us."
"But it doesn't," I bite my lip. "Initially I like the thought, but what if instead of making it how people react to us, we flip it and make people behave like we do. Confident, cocky, careless. We act that way constantly, it's our behaviour which makes this poison ours."
He chuckles and nods, "Fuck that's a good idea and I think I have the perfect poison in mind for it."
We spend the remainder of the time going into detail about the project, mapping out the instructions of how we will make this concoction on Monday. We include background checks of each plants to see if we can relate to any of them, checking if we need to order them whilst scanning the classroom poisons shelves as well as the greenhouse.
I notice a very important ingredient missing and huff in annoyance before coming to terms with something. I write a short, concise letter during break meanwhile sat outside of reception, addressing it appropriately before walking over to the receptionist in order for her to send it.
