Blood red—wind whistling— coppery tongue— simmering skin— burnt forests.
I blink and a green field greets me; Earth has never been more beautiful. Despite Envy's kingdom having an uncanny resemblance to England, the fresh air is certainly different. More fresher, purer and natural. A black taxi is waiting for me with a smartly dressed man waiting patiently with the back door open. All for me. I begin walking to him only a whoosh causes me to turn back around and look curiously at who just followed me through the portal.
Mr Ellison is our family's butler. He's a young envy demon with a smart tuxedo and bow tie, taking after his father's tall height and slim body. His hair is swept to the side, holding a small wooden box in his large grasp, "Princess, you forgot this."
"I completely forgot I sent that letter," I take it from his grasp and put it in my bag. "I'll see you when I do, Mr Ellison." I turn back around and carry on making my way to the vehicle, the box making it awkward for me to walk.
Dutifully, my family's butler relieves me from my bag and accompanies me to the car, helping me slide onto the seat and passing my crutches afterwards. Admittedly my leg feels better today, I suppose the healing tincture is truly helping.
"Princess?" He questions somewhat unsure. If an Ellison is unsure about something you know it's bad or complicated. "Do I have permission to speak freely?"
I purse my lips and raise my brow curiously, "I trust you, so yes."
"It's regarding your mother," he sighs. "I know she seems incredibly tense and hot tempered, however it's due to her hectic schedule. As a warning, I presume something has occurred at the Centre. She's constantly having meetings there, on a daily basis. Even more regularly than usual."
I give him a shrug, "Why should I care?"
"I know you wish to go back to school, but there are things you do not know."
"What? And you do?" I ask incredulously.
"No," he says quietly. "Yet I'm supposed to know everything."
"And how do you know there is something you don't know, if you're unsure if it's there?"
He takes a second to comprehend what I just said and leans by my ear, whispering beneath his breath, "Because it doesn't add up." Leaning back and straightening to his full height, he gives a curt nod and a forced smile, "I wish you well, Princess." He shuts the door and stands there as the car drives away and towards school. I see him become a smaller and smaller dot in the mirror before we swerve around a hill and he disappears from my view.
A sinking feeling settles in the pit of my stomach like a ship's anchor and I can't help but feel cold. I tug my chunky light tulip cardigan closer around my frame, looking out of the window.
The taxi pulls around the fountain and the driver helps me get out. I nod at him to leave before tackling the school steps- I can't wait until I get rid of these crutches. It'd make my life so much more simpler, especially with carrying bags as well.
I open the door and begin walking through the halls, the school is eerily quiet, these hallways are deserted and everything seems more darker. It's almost lifeless.
I walk around a corner and nearly bump into someone. I don't know who at first, however the strong odour of alcohol causes my nose to wrinkle in disgust; it's cheap liquor that makes my stomach roll, and it's fair to say it's rolling. The person grabs me by the shoulder and stares straight at me, his drunken gaze trying to level out my face.
