ISA'S POV

Great. I fucked up. Again.

Walking unaccompanied through the cold and tenebrous woods of Zevil Island, I honestly thought what happened was for the better.

I may have sounded out of my mind, and it really felt like it right then... But just hear me out.

Before Trick Tower, Killua and I were becoming friends and what happened? My own massive ego rejected him and turned my own cousin against me.

Just hours ago, we were already the best of friends and possibly getting even closer. How did it end? My overwhelmingly huge pride took over and now he doesn't even want to see me.

If it's going to be like that every time we try to get along, maybe we're just better off as strangers.

My thoughts were pushed aside when my ears picked up chattering ahead. The conversation was distorted because of the distance and the surrounding crisps of dead leaves whispering in the soft breeze.

I contracted the muscles in my calves to produce as little sound as possible. I held back my breath to keep it from obstructing the voices ahead.

"It's been a while now. Maybe we should go check on him."

A warm wave of relief washed over me when I recognized the voice.

"Gon!" I yelled, forgetting all about the Shadow Step I was using and running towards my cousin.

Now, thinking back, I was so desperate to find him that if this had been a cheap trap set by another participant, I sure as hell would've fallen victim to it like the world's biggest idiot.

Luckily for me, it wasn't.

The spiky haired ravenette turned towards me, visibly astonished. I was afraid he'd get angry at me, but instead, a bright smile illuminated his face.

"ISA!"

He dropped his fishing rod, ran towards me and pulled me into a bear hug as I tackled him and we both fell to the ground, giggling like kids.

"I'm so sorry for the things I said!" He said, and by the tone of his voice, it was clear he meant it.

I held him tighter, comforted by his natural chocolate pancakes scent. "Nonono! Shut up, dingus, what you said was right. I'm sorry for acting like a total asshole towards you and Killua!"

Quite honestly, a part of me wished Killua was there to hear me.

But even if he did, would he have forgiven me?

Yet another reason why we were better off as strangers.

The sound of someone clearing their throat snapped us back to reality. I pulled away from Gon and sent our tall blonde friend an apologetic look when I realized that I hadn't acknowledged his presence at all.

"Uh, h-hey... Kurapika..." I said as I blushed in embarrassment. "Where is the old geezer?" I asked and accidentally interrupted him as he was about to greet me back.

Gon understood I was talking about Leorio and pointed forward to a very big and obvious dark cave that I, for some reason, hadn't noticed at all until then.

"His target is in there. A poisoner named Panzu."

I stood there and blinked, wondering how blind I must've been to miss that huge ass cave.

Again, had this been a trap, I'd be dead.

Dead.

I pursed my lips. "Damn..." I said with raised brows. It seemed very deep and dark, meaning he had literally no escape other than the front.
