I am horrified by these recent acts of hate and racism. I am not Black, and I cannot really claim to have experienced racism. But I want to do something to help. Writing is one of my strongest skills, and I figured it was the best way for me to reach out to people, and try to make a difference, no matter how small. I do not watch nor read the news and only knew about what happened to George Floyd. Yesterday, I heard about what happened to Breonna Taylor. She would have turned 27 yesterday. I know that there are many more examples of acts of hate like this happening, too many to name them all. Racism nowadays isn't as blatant as it used to be. It is a lot more subtle and difficult to pick up on. Sometimes the person who is being racist doesn't even know it. Stereotypes and assumptions are in our brains and we often assume they are right. A lot of racism is ignorance. Ignorance about how words may be interpreted, ignorance about stereotypes, and how they are not the truth. Ignorance about priorities. Ignorance about white privilege. If we can get rid of that ignorance, we can get rid of a lot of racism. And to get rid of that ignorance we must begin to do something. Educate, protest, listen, and get justice. Police brutality has been going unpunished for too long, and so has racism. It is time to stop the talk and walk the walk. So get involved. Whether it be raising awareness on social media, going to a protest, signing a petition, or even just speaking up, we all must begin to get involved. That is the only way we will make a difference.#Blacklivesmatter
