Chapter 31

As soon as I reached my office, my knees gave up and I slumped forcefully on my chair. My shoulders shook as tears escaped from my eyes.

You don't deserve the throne. If the Safronov fails, I will be the first to laugh. I mean this with all my heart.

I covered my mouth with my hands to mute my loud sobs. My tears kept falling unapologetically. Disobedient creatures! Stop falling! I have a job to do in five minutes!

Resigning,
Eve Williams

She even signed it with a red ink to hurt me intentionally.

One time we were talking and I happened to mention to her that in Asia, red was commonly associated with death since it was the color of blood. In Korean superstition, writing a name of a living person with a red ink was discouraged. They only used red ink in writing the name of the dead.

So Eve writing her name with a red ink was a message to me: that the old Eve Williams was dead.

And my heart was grieving for the sister I lost.

My timer beeped signaling the 5 minutes that I allotted for my drama session was over; it was time to work.

I fixed my face and calmed myself in the span of two minutes. There would be time for grief later, right now, I needed to work.

I wonder if I could live a peaceful life someday. Pwede kaya iyon sa klase ng pamumuhay na mayroon ako? Sa klase ng pangalan na dinadala ko? Ano bang pakiramdam nang tamarin? O kahit malate man lang? Hindi ko pa iyon nararanasan sa buong buhay ko.

I wanted to experience waking up late just for the hell of it; eating my breakfast at 11 because I was too lazy to get up; and watching television all day with my pajamas on.

I didn't even know what Spotify was. Was it some kind of historical spot or something? A park, perhaps?

I arranged the pictures of the three crimes on my desk along with all the autopsy results and their background. I was reading Agent Yan's report when a mosquito stopped in front of me, a note was hanging below it by a thread attached to the mosquito... robot.

My owner was an idiot. He was so sorry for what he did. Could he come in? Poor him. :(

I laughed softly and wrote a 'Come in' on the note. The mosquito robot flew out the window as I pretended to continue reading the reports.

Sometimes it was hard to focus when you knew that you would just be interrupted soon.

A knock made me stare at the door. McAkiro Morgan knocked? That was new. I cleared my throat before I shouted Come in, as McAkiro entered my office wearing a gray suit.

I almost choked on the spot.

His white blond hair was combed, his new black shoes were polished and his gray formal suit was ironed.

He looked very different from the usual McAkiro who kicked doors to enter a room with his dusty black boots and crumpled shirt and pants that never experienced how hot an iron was.

I bit my lower lip to stop myself from laughing. Nagbabagong buhay na ang lolo niyo.

"I'm sorry," he said with his head bowed down, not wanting to look at me. "I was told that... Eve resigned because I told everyone of our... marriage." His voice cracked and my eyes widened in surprise. "I'm s-sorry I didn't know it would be that way."
