Author's P.O.V
Yet again, Krystal has made her way back to the infirmary. Night had already fallen, she had Robin beside her on her gurney. He had his arm around her and he was already sound asleep while she watched the curtain of the open window dance in the wind. The cool, ocean air filled the room and it helped her relax. She could see the stars peek from behind the clouds and she could hear the waves crashing against the rocks. Her eyelids started to droop and her breathing slowed down.
'Krystal...'
The voice made her uneasy, it made her freeze in place.
"Dad...?" She called out into the void.
'You are my daughter and you shall do what I say.'
"Where are you?"
'Once you and I have completed this mission, we will leave this place and live a new life.'
"...What do I have to do?"
'Come to me child.'
Krystal's eyes shot open. Her heart was pounding out of her chest and the voices continued to echo around in her head. The beeping of the heart rate monitor didn't wake up Robin, she thought that he might have been busy and yet he still comes to keep her company. She quietly got up and turned off the monitors so that they would make no sound. She sat down on the table that was beside the window and took a deep breath in.
... And closed her eyes.
A single thought of Slade suddenly flashed through her mind. Her eyes shot open and her breathing hastened. She scanned the room for any sign of him and only saw Robin sleeping soundly on the gurney. And with that, she let out a sigh of relief and walked over to him.
She pulled out the picture of her, her father and her mother from the pocket of her jacket. She almost crumbled the picture from her trembling hands. Her eyes drifted over to her father's face. His carefree smile seemed to curl into a sinister smirk in Krystal's tearful eyes. She brought the photo to her face and covered her eyes.
"I know what I have to do..." She reluctantly whispered to herself. A maniacal cackle echoed in her ears and it made her heart ache in fear. Voices started to invade her thoughts again, words dripping with harsh poison and it ran through her body as if it was draining the life out of her. In an attempt to distract her mind from the voices, she stretched out a shaky finger and ran it through Robin's hair. Sure enough they stopped but then they were quickly replaced with regrets and self pity.
I'm sorry...
"What do you think you're doing...?" He asked, almost threateningly but with a hint of sadness trembling in his words. She was startled by his gesture but her eyes were too filled with tears for her to react at all. She had no energy to respond so instead, he slowly guided her back into the bed and made her lay down next to him. He looked longingly into her eyes overflowing with emotion and gently traced circles on her cheek with his thumb. He was so tired, he could barely keep his eyes open. He knew she was trying to run away again so he held her as tight as he could but his tiredness still won the fight as he drifted off into sleep. She took this chance to give him one last tight hug and take in his scent once more. She took his face into her hands and ever so softly gave him a peck in the lips as not to wake him up again. She stayed still with their noses touching and foreheads pressed together, she could feel his warm breath brush against her lips. His eyelashes were long and his eye bags were dark.
She didn't want to leave his side, she wanted time to stop even if it meant they would be left to wander aimlessly into eternity. But alas, she could not bring herself to tell him. She had even thought of doing a double suicide with him but she just ended up beating herself up for even allowing a thought like that to exist in her mind. She forced herself to get up from the bed and made her way out the door.
She went back to her old room and gathered all of her possessions, made sure nothing that would remind them of her was left. Thankfully, there wasn't much that she needed to carry, but before she went to the main exit, she took one last look at their main hang out area and left her communicator on the table.
"You planning on leaving us again?" Krystal yelped and saw Cyborg leaning against the doorway.
"How did you know I was here?" she asked.
"Do you honestly think that I didn't install motion detectors everywhere after the first time you left?" He asked sarcastically with a raised eyebrow. She was almost compelled to laugh but the thought of her betraying her friends again weighed heavy in her mind. She took a glance towards her communicator and thought of faking it by grabbing it from the table and going back to her room, saying she forgot it on the table. But all she managed to do was let out a tired sigh.
No more lies...
"There's somewhere else that I need to be. I'm sorry." She said as she withdrew her hand and stared back at Cyborg head on.
"You don't have to worry about fitting in with us, heck, you don't even have to go on missions with us!" He pleaded as he walked over to her and put his hands on her shoulders. She simply shrugged his hands off and took a step back from him.
"As nice as that sounds, you guys are not my real family. I made a promise to my mom before she died." She said with a shaky heart but clear voice. He had no rebuttal to what she said and he was pretty sure that no amount of persuasion would help him change her mind. Cyborg let out a sigh and shook his head in defeat. Before she was able to walk past him, he held up a CD in front of her.
"It's the security footage of you sneaking out tonight." He said bluntly. Her eyes went wide for a second but were replaced with a loving expression. She quietly took the disk from his hand and proceeded to the main exit.
"Will I see you again?" He asked hopefully, sadly anticipating her answer.
She stopped in her tracks as a tear ran down her face. She took a deep breath and raised her head. She turned around and showed him a blank smile, then quietly walked away.
