I ran through the forest, breathing heavily as I come to a stop for breathe but then go right back to running. Every Christmas my best friend, Autumn, and I went for a walk in the forest; we had been since we were four. But now was different, my dear friend had run ahead of me and was now screaming bloody murder. I was too tired to run anymore, the only thing that was keeping me going was the desire to see my Autumn okay.
I came to a quick stop at a huge cliff, almost going over the edge, and scanned the area. She wasn't here, her screams had stopped. Tears whelped in my eyes I ran along the cliff side, looking down at the river below. Right when I had begun to cry, I saw something move near the bottom of the cliff-right above the river. Autumn was laying motionless on a ledge a few feet above the deadly waters.
"Autumn! Hang on, I'm coming to get you!" To be honest I wasn't sure how she got there but I just wanted her out. There was a broken ladder leading down to the bottom of the cliff, but it would only take me halfway. I'd have to either jump for it or try and climb the rest of the way. With tears running down my cheeks I made my way down the rickety old ladder, stopping when I reached the end. She was right below me.
I could make it... I can make it... I have to make it...
I bit my lip so hard it started to bleed as I readied myself for the jump. "Come on Jordan... It just a little fall. You'll be fine." I tried to boost my confidence but only seemed to shrink it. With no thought in my head I let go of the ladder and free fell to the hard rock surface below. With a loud crack, I landed feet first on the small platform where my best friend laid looking lifeless.
"A-autumn... I'm here. It's okay" I whispered as I held her head my arms. Within a few short minutes she woke up, coughing up blood. I cried tears of joy and hugged her with all my strength. "Wha-what happened...?" She sounded dazed and confused. "You ran and I almost lost you... Almost."
She looked around, confusion never leaving her face. "Is everything okay Autumn? You look like your leg is twisted... We need to get you home." She nodded and clung to my shoulders as I picked her up, walking along the narrow ledge to another old ladder, this one making it way up to the top and the bottom.
When we were up I was too tired to keep walking, I collapsed by a tree with Autumn still holding onto me. "I'm sorry Jordan... I-I didn't mean for all this to happen..." I smiled and held her close. For the first time I notice she was siting in my lap and suddenly felt really nervous. So what if I had feelings for this girl?
"I'm just glad you aren't dead... I wouldn't be able to live without you." She frowned and snuggled closer to me, she head resting on my chest. "Don't ever stop living because of me. I'm not a cause worth dying for..." I got chills when I heard he say that then got really mad. "You are a cause worth fighting for. I wouldn't have tried to save you if you weren't! I love yo-" I stopped then quickly looked away.
Autumn's hand was put on my face, bringing it back so I could see her. Then... She kissed me. "I love you too." I didn't even react for a few minutes, I was completely frozen. After what seemed like forever, I quickly went in for a kiss. Both of us smiling into the kiss and deepening it by tilting our heads. I ended the kiss by pulling away and placing one last kiss on her nose.
"Let's rest here for tonight. We may miss 'santa' but we need rest. Neither of us can walk, but that doesn't mean we can't continue, right?" She laughed at me, nuzzling closer and laying her head in my lap. "You wish lover boy, Merry Christmas."
