Chapter Twelve: Danger
Spirit dashed from the stage and into the crowd. He wasn't going to let Stein escape him this time. He was determined to confront him, to make him understand the guilt that he's been feeling. He make Stein understand how much he regretted leaving him alone in the alley that night. The fans quieted down as he tried his best to get through them, though a lot of them tried grabbing him. He could hear Kami shouting for him in the background, but he didn't care, he just needed to talk to Stein. He didn't understand why Stein looked so frightened when Spirit looked at him. Eventually, Spirit got sick of the crowd, they were just in the way.
"Get out of my way!" he shouted, causing everyone to go completely silent.
They gaped at him with wide eyes. Though, he had no time to think about his actions. All he wanted was to leave the building. Finally, he reached the entrance, pulling the door open in a hurry. A burst of chilled air swept over his body, making him shiver. He was in no way, shape or form dressed for the outdoors, but he couldn't help it. He sprinted onto the icy sidewalk. Stein was nowhere in sight, but Spirit could see traces of fresh footprints, he followed them. He ran as fast as he could, panting as he went. It seemed like forever had passed before he found Stein, who stood in front of a small cafe.
One hand was pressed against the collar of Spirit's former coat, the other was clutching his stomach. He stood panting, his eyes glued to the window of the cafe. Spirit stood up straight, slowly walking over to Stein. When he was beside the boy, Spirit gazed into the window. Stein was watching what appeared to be a young couple. They were laughing and looking into each other's eyes. Spirit glanced over to Stein, who hadn't even seemed to realize Spirit's presence. The look on Stein's face made Spirit feel bad inside. It was an awful expression. And, when Stein's left hand fell from his mouth, Spirit took it in his right.
Stein seemed startled by the motion. His body jerked, but he didn't turn to look at Spirit, he just let his other arm fall to his side.
"Stein?"
Spirit spoke his name in a very quiet voice and he wasn't sure if Stein heard him or not. But, Stein looked over to him and when Spirit looked into his eyes, his grip tightened around Stein's hand. Stein backed up, and tried to pull his hand from Spirit's.
"Stop trying to run away from me!" Spirit snapped.
Stein seemed to flinch at his words and Spirit let his gaze fall to the ground.
"Sorry, look, it's just... you always run. Why do you always run, do you really dislike me that much?" Spirit questioned, bringing his eyes up to meet Stein's.
Something seemed to flicker in them and the fight in Stein seemed to vanish.
"I... don't even know you well enough to dislike you," Stein whispered.
Spirit found his hesitation to be strange, but his reply was plausible.
"So, stop running and get to know me," Spirit suggested.
