Chapter 5 - Saturday
"So (F/N), what do you want to do today?" It was finally Saturday. Shōyō and I were sitting at the counter with Natsu, all eating breakfast.
"I don't really know. What do you want to do?"
"I don't know." Both of us thought hard for a second before his face lit up. "I just had the best idea!! I should take you to the park and teach you how to play volleyball!"
Aw, he's so excited. <3 "That sounds so fun, Shō-kun!"
"Shō-kun?"
"O-oh! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be disrespectful. If you don't want me to call you that, that's totally cool." Oh my god did I just unintentionally offend him I can't believe myself I'm so dumb-
"No! It's fine! I actually really like it. It's a good nickname." Thank goodness. "Do you want me to invite Kageyama?" He asked.
"Do you think he would come if you invited him? He seemed like he kinda keeps to himself."
"Yeah, he'd probably come unless he had a conflict in his schedule."
"Okay! Maybe this will be a good way to get to know him better."
"Cool! I'll text him and then we should leave for the park. He lives closer to it than we do."
Natsu spoke up. "Can I come?" Shōyō looked at me. His face had "no" written all over it, but it also looked like he didn't know how to tell her she couldn't. He pulled out his phone.
"Natsu-nee," I said, trying to be as nice as possible. "It's really far away. I don't know if you would want to bike that far."
"Okay." She pouted. Crisis averted.
"Are you ready to go?" Shōyō asked.
"Yep!" We left the house.
Shōyō talked for most of the bike ride. Eventually, he started asking me questions.
"So, where are you from? Like, where were you born? The U.K.?"
"I'm from America. I was born there and grew up there. English is my first language."
"Oh. So Japanese would be your second language?"
"Well, no. I speak English fluently, I learned Mandarin in school and with a lot of help from my friends, so that's pretty good. I'm still learning Korean for my job, but I know a bit, so I can speak it well. It's maybe about the same as my Mandarin. Japanese is my fourth language. As you can tell, I'm not very good. I can understand more than I can say, but that's because I'm not great at the grammar. I can't speak super quickly, and I have to think a second before I say anything. It's eh, but I'm improving. That's why I'm studying here."
"Your Japanese isn't as bad as you say it is; you've already improved since you got here! Also, I think the pauses feel longer to you. I don't really notice them that much. That's a lot of languages! Do you ever get confused between them?"
"Not really. They're different enough."
"That's so cool!" We arrived at the park. Shōyō checked his phone. "Kageyama says he'll be here in five." We locked up our bikes and went to an area with a few tall trees. Hinata grabbed a portable net from his bag and stretched his arms up above his head, trying to make it the proper height.
"Want me to get it?" I asked.
"I can do it!" He said. :(
"Nah, it's ok, I'll get it." I took the other end and tied both strings to a tree. Then I walked over to the other side and fixed it to another tree.
