Chapter 4 - Walk

For the most part, I stayed next to Yachi on the walk there. She's so nice.

After a while of just talking about whatever came to mind, she asked me, "So, what are your plans?"

"For what? Like the rest of today?"

"I guess, but I kind of meant the future." Do I tell her? I mean, I want to look like I have plans, but I can't really tell her that I'm a trainee.

"Oh. I guess I want to be a plastic surgeon or an animator, eventually." Technically true. I want to have one of those jobs after my idol career ends, or if that doesn't work out for me. "I know those are very different, but I have interest in both."

"Woah. That's so cool!" She beamed. Aw, her eyes are so pretty. I already get the feeling that she's the friend that everyone babies because they're so innocent and cute. You guys know who I'm talking about. Yes. The friend you're thinking of right now.

"Thanks. What are your plans?"

"I'm not sure. Maybe I'll work at a design company."

I smiled. "That sounds fun. What about you guys?" I asked the rest of the group.

"I want to be a professional volleyball player!!" Hinata declared.

"Me too," Kageyama mumbled.

"I don't know yet," Tsukishima answered bluntly.

"Me neither, Tsukki!" exclaimed Yamaguchi.

"It's fine to not know yet. The important thing is that once you do know, you embrace it. Even if it seems wild and out of reach, grab onto your dream and don't let it go." They all just kinda stared at me for a few seconds. "Sorry...did I mess up on a word? Did I say it weirdly?"

"...THAT WAS SO COOL, (F/N)!!!!!!" Hinata's eyes sparkled.

Tsukishima glared at me, then started walking. Bruh, leave me alone. But what came next hurt.

"What do you know about chasing dreams?"

Everyone stopped and was completely silent. He turned around. Hinata's jaw had dropped. He looked at Tsukishima first, then me, then him, then me again. Tsukishima just held me in a stare-down. It went on in that way for a few seconds of burning silence before he finally had to look at the road in between us. There were so many things I could say right now. More than you ever will... Admittedly, not much... Constantly running towards a goal is better than a dreamless sleep... I could explain everything. I could say nothing.

I laughed bitterly. "More than you would think." Smile? Gone. Mood? Ruined. Hotel? Trivago. I started walking again. He dropped to the back of the group.

"Tsukki..." I heard Yamaguchi say behind me, his quiet way of asking for him to apologize. Tsukishima didn't say anything. I felt tears prick my eyes. Two ran down my face. I don't even cry that often or easily. That just really...hurt. I started walking faster. Kageyama jogged to catch up, frowning.

"(Y/N), do you- Oh. Are you crying?"

"No."

"Oh. Ok." We kept walking in silence until we arrived at the convenience store. It was owned by the coach of the team's family. Shōyō asked him for six meat buns.

"That'll be $8.36," He said. I pulled out my debit card. They stared at it. I realized too late that it probably looked like I was rich if I already had any sort of card at sixteen, and that is NOT the case. I had a little money on it that I saved from last month.

"What are you doing?" Hinata asked.

"I'll pay," I stated simply.

"No, I'll pay! It's your first day here."

"No, I'll get it."

"No, you can't do that-"

"Yes, I can." I swiped my card in the machine before he could say anymore.

"(F/N)!" Hehe. We said thank you to the coach and walked out of the store.

"Thank you, (Y/N)," They all said.

"...(F/N), you really didn't need to; I was going to get it-"

"It's fine. My company gives me a small monthly allowance, so I just save as much of it as I can per month in case I want to buy something later."

"Company?" He whipped around to face me. "You have a job?"

Shoot. I said too much.

"Oh...yeah, I guess so."

"What's your job?"

"I, uh, I don't really know how to say it in Japanese." Of course I knew how to say it in Japanese. I just panicked and played dumb.

"Well what do you do at your job? Like what's involved?"

"I don't know. Cameras and stuff."

"Are you behind the camera? Do you take pictures? Are you a photographer?"

"No. I'm the person in front of the camera."

"Do you hold up stuff and say good things about it? Do you smile and say how refreshing it is even if you haven't tried it?

"Uh...no?"

"Do you pose in front of the camera? Or is it a video?"

"Well, yes to both, in a way."

"Hmm...so you're a model?"

"Sort-of." I mean, that's part of my job, in a way. Kinda. A little. Not really but sorta.

"Sort-of? Well what else do you do? Do you-"

"My god Hinata, let her BREATHE." It was Kageyama. Thank the lord somebody stopped him. "It's not that I'm uninterested in what you have to say; it's just you're firing question after question at her."

"Oh. Sorry, (Y/N)!"

"It's fine."

He caught up to me and walked next to me. I watched him out of the corner of my eye. He had been staring at my face for a good two minutes before he said anything.

"Yeah, I can see you as a model." Code red. I was NOT expecting that. I felt my face instantly light on fire.

"Oh! Haha, thanks, Kageyama." I quickly laughed it off.

He just turned back to the road.

"This road connects to the one that we came to school on, (F/N). Bye, guys!" Shōyō said.

"Okay. Bye everybody! Thanks for inviting me to walk with you guys today. I really appreciate it."

"Thanks for coming, (Y/N)! It was fun hanging out with you," Yachi said. The other guys all waved and said goodbye.

And with that, we got on our bikes and went home.
