Chapter 6 - Thoughts

Kageyama POV

As I lay on my bed, I tossed the volleyball up above my face. I watched it go up, then down. Up, down, up, down. The repetitive motion of it was relaxing. Yesterday's outing with (Y/N) and Hinata was fun. That last spike she did was pretty good. I glanced at my clock. 10:47 AM. The ceiling fan was on its lowest setting. I watched it spin in slow circles. I got up and went to the bathroom to brush my teeth. Maybe I'll go for a jog today. I squeezed toothpaste onto the bristles. (Y/N) is a very nice person. I'm glad she doesn't seem to dislike me so far. She's pretty. I swished mouthwash and then put on my running clothes before I realized what I had just thought. I think she's pretty. She's really, really pretty. I took the stairs two at a time on my way down.

"Where are you going?" It was my older sister, Miwa.

"Just a jog."

"Okay. Have fun!"

"Thanks."

I finished tying my shoes and left the house. The weather was warm, a little too hot for running, but it's fine. I guess I should have gone earlier, or maybe late afternoon. As I ran, my mind went elsewhere. I'm excited for the training camp next week. Volleyball all day, everyday, for three weeks. I think we're going to improve a lot. I hope (Y/N) goes. Wait. This has nothing to do with her. Why did my brain just say that. I passed an old man sitting on his front porch. He waved. I waved back and kept running. There were barely any other people outside today. Two kids were passing a volleyball back and forth to each other at the park unsupervised. They couldn't have been much older than seven. It's a pretty safe neighborhood, so I'm not too worried about them being alone, but they should still probably have an adult with them. I jogged on my usual route past the blue house. I turned the street corner at the grey house, then continued up the road to another blue house. Eventually, I ended up back at my house. I went inside and closed the door.

I immediately showered and then went back to my room. I grabbed my phone off the dresser and checked my messages. There was a new one from an unknown number.

Unknown: Hey, Is this Kageyama?

You: Why? Who is this?

Unknown: It's me, (F/N). Shōyō gave me this number!

You: Oh.

(Y/N): So, is this Kageyama?

You: Yes.

Read 11:53 AM

She left me on read. I mean, I do that to people all the time and don't mean anything by it. So why is it bothering me? I desperately searched for something to say.

You: How are you?

Read 11:55 AM

(Y/N): I'm good. How are you?

Fine or good? FINE OR GOOD? WHAT DO I SAY? Oh my god, I should just call Hinata or something. No, he doesn't know anything about this. I should call one of the upperclassmen, they have more experience talking to girls. NO, I should do this myself.

You: I'm good, thank you.

You: What are you doing today?

(Y/N): I don't know yet. Right now I'm just hanging out with Natsu. She's doing my hair :) Shōyō is still asleep. I'm going to wake him up in a few minutes.

(Y/N): What are you doing?

You: I just went for a run.

Idiot, she asked what you are doing TODAY. As in, from this moment forward, not what you already did! I could feel myself frowning even deeper than usual.

You: I'm just going to figure out the rest of today as I go.

(Y/N): Want to hang out?

Oh my god. I hadn't even realized that what I said earlier made it sound like I wanted to meet up with her. Well actually, did it? I reread what I had written. I don't know. Did it?? Or is this just her asking me, not relating to the previous texts? I don't know!

You: I don't know.

(Y/N): Ok

WAIT NO- I didn't mean "no", I just meant "I don't know". Now she probably thinks I don't want to hang out with her.

You: Do you want to?

Delivered 12:01 AM

Oh. She must have left to go wake up Hinata. I guess we aren't meeting today, then. I tossed my phone onto my bed. I actually sort of wanted to go see her. Why, though? I never hang out with Yachi on the weekends. I rarely even hang out with Hinata outside of practice. I'll see her tomorrow at school, though.

And with that final thought, I went downstairs to go eat lunch.
