Chapter 10 - Nevermind
We had taken the table closest to the windows. Kuroo sat in between Kenma and I. Yamamoto, the guy who Tanaka hugged earlier, sat across from us with a tall guy named Lev and their libero, Yaku.
"So, how long have you been a manager?" Yaku asked.
"Only two weeks. When I got here, Shōyō told me I should join, so I did. It's a lot of fun."
"That's good."
"What's America like?" Lev had just been blatantly staring at me the entire time since I sat down with them. It was kind of making me uncomfortable.
"I don't know. It depends on where you go. I'm not really sure I understand the question."
"Like, what's different about it?"
"Oh. Um, it's kind of hard to describe. Well, we don't have an official language, but English is spoken the most. I feel like each household is kind of different in terms of culture, like it really just depends on where your parents are from and how they were raised."
"Is it true that you don't take off your shoes when you enter the house?" He said obnoxiously. Yaku gave him a look. I could tell he didn't mean anything by it, but his question kind of annoyed me a little. I tried not to let it show.
"Like I said, depends on the household. In my family, wearing shoes in the house was not allowed."
"Oh. What do you even eat?"
"I don't know...food? I don't know."
"You don't know? Do Americans really eat fast-food all the time?"
"No, we don't." I was probably noticeably agitated by now. "I just don't really know how to answer the question. It sorta changes every day or depending on the day."
"It's okay if you don't know how to say it. Is it true that-"
"LEV! STOP!" Yaku lightly slapped him upside the head. "You're being rude!" People from a few tables close by turned around.
"Sorry, (Y/N)."
"It's fine." I went back to eating. I probably shouldn't have too much more. I had already gained a little weight since arriving in Japan. Not enough that it made much of a difference visually, so it wasn't really a big deal, but I still wanted to lose it. Others were starting to leave for personal practice. I quickly got up and threw away the paper bowl and cup in one of the cafeteria's large trash cans (Oikawa is quaking). Before walking out of the cafeteria, I looked back. Yaku was talking to Lev. He seemed sorta mad. Then he started lecturing the entire group with a "concerned mom" face. Is it about me? They all looked over at the same time. He's definitely talking about me. I left.
As I opened the doors to the outside, the cool night air hit my face. It felt nice. I started walking. I'm not even sure where I'm going; just "away" is enough. I heard shoes squeaking in Gym 2 and peeked inside before going in. Kageyama was tossing to Hinata.
"Hey, guys."
"Hey, (F/N)!" Shōyō replied.
"Want me to toss for you guys?"
"That'd be great!" I walked over to the ball bin. I helped for half an hour before Hinata called for a water break.
"Hey, (Y/N)," Kageyama said suddenly. "Do you want to learn how to set?"
"Right now?"
"Yeah."
"Okay! I'm down."
He grabbed a volleyball that was laying on the ground and gave it to Shōyō. "I know you've seen it before, but this is what it looks like." Hinata tossed the ball to him. He set it back in his direction. "I just want you to have an idea first so you don't get hit in the face with a toss." He did it twice more.
"Put your hands like this." He demonstrated. I tried to copy. "No, bring them up more. The other up."
"I am bringing them up."
"No, I mean like the outside part." He frowned even deeper.
"I don't understand." He sighed. Reaching out, he took my hands and made them into the correct shape. I don't know why, but the contact made my face start burning. I quickly looked at the floor.
"When you set the ball, extend your arms outwards. Are you ready?"
"Can I watch one more time first?"
"Sure." He and Hinata showed me again."Thank you." We spent an hour just practicing setting while Shōyō did receives against a wall. I felt kinda bad for him, but he looked like he was doing okay. Eventually, when I felt ready, I ended up setting for him to spike while Kageyama tossed to me. I was having fun. After a while, we began to clean up.
"(F/N)..." Kageyama began just like before.
"Yeah?"
"Nevermind."
"Nooooo, you have to tell me now!" I smiled, but when I turned around to face him, he looked apprehensive.
He hesitated. "...Are you interested in Kuroo?" He looked everywhere but at me. Hinata's jaw had dropped.
"I don't really know him much." I threw the ball up in the air a couple of times. Now I couldn't look at him. In all honesty, I think I like Kageyama a little. I mean, he frowns a lot, and his social skills aren't top notch, but he's a nice boy, overall. I like being around him. "Why?"
"I dunno." He finished picking up the volleyballs and walked out.
"Wonder what that was about," Hinata said.
"Mm. I have no idea." Was Kageyama...jealous? I tried not to think about that possibility. We left the gym.
