Chapter 9 - Meet Nekoma
We all filed off the bus. It was soooo hot out.
"(Y/N)!" I turned around. Ennoshita jogged over to me. "You left your phone under the seat."
"Oh, thank you so much." When I took it from him, our hands touched. He blushed and looked away.
"No problem." Once everyone was off, we walked up the stairs to the school. Why did it have to be up on a hill in the summer in the middle of the day? Another team came to greet us, but it wasn't Shinzen. Letters printed on the side of a few of them's sweatpants read 'Nekoma'. Isn't the guy that Shōyō knows on that team? Everyone's faces lit up. Apparently, our team was good friends with theirs. A guy from Nekoma dropped to his knees in front of Kiyoko, Yachi, and I.
"There's three of them! A pretty one, a cute one, AND a gorgeous one!"
"I've never been called that in my entire life, lol" I whispered to the other managers. Yachi choked on her water. Kiyoko suppressed a laugh.
Tanaka stood in between us and the guy with his arms held like Jesus. "This is the true power of Karasuno." They smiled and bro hugged.
"(F/N)!" Shōyō called out to me from farther ahead. I walked over. "This is my friend, Kozume Kenma."
"Hello, Kozume. I'm (F/N)."
"Hey." Hm. Quiet. His hair...is it pudding-hair? I think that's what it's called. I noticed a PSP sticking out of his pocket. "You can call me Kenma if you want. I kind of prefer it."
"Okay." Before I could say anything more, a guy who had been talking to Daichi came over.
"Hey, guys. Hey Kenma." He stood next to Hinata's friend. "How was the drive?"
"Kind of long, but it was okay," I said politely.
"(F/N) brought a mic and we all did karaoke!" Hinata's eyes sparkled. "She's a REALLY good singer!"
I laughed. "Aw, thanks, Shō. You are too!" He's a literal sunshine. "I'm (L/N) (F/N). I'm Karasuno's medic and one of the managers."
"Nice to meet you. I'm Kuroo Tetsurō, Nekoma's captain." He grinned at me. "Are you the exchange student staying with Shorty?"
"Uh, yeah, I guess."
"Where are you from?"
"America. But I lived in Korea for a year before I moved here. I'm here to learn Japanese."
"Woah, that's fun. You're doing well!"
"Aw, thanks! I can get a little confused with grammar, though, so if I mess up, please tell me."
"Nah, you're good. If you want, we could talk more later, at dinner maybe? I think Daichi just said you guys are gonna go put your bags in the rooms."
"Oh, cool. I'll come find you before." Karasuno started walking into the school. "Bye, Kuroo!"
"Goodbye, (Y/N)."
- -Timeskip Because I'm Unprofessional- -
I watched Kageyama set the ball to Tanaka. It got blocked by a guy from the other team. We had managed to leave early enough in the morning that we could get a full afternoon of practice in. We were losing. There were two courts inside the gymnasium. Shinzen had multiple gyms. It's a pretty big school. On one court, Karasuno played Ubugawa. On the other, Nekoma faced Shinzen. Ubugawa's spikes were absolutely terrifying. They could get so many service aces in a row.
I looked over at the other court. Kuroo jumped up for a one-on-one block. He stopped it and scored a point for Nekoma. I accidentally made eye contact with him; he gave me a sly smile. Did he think I had been watching him? Oh god, I hope not. I turned my attention back to Karasuno. As I did so, I saw Kageyama look away quickly. I didn't think anything of it. Our game ended. The managers and I grabbed some waters and headed over to the boys. Kageyama took his water from me last.
"(F/N)..." He was frowning. Did I do something wrong?
"Yeah?"
"Nevermind." He walked away. That was kinda weird. Karasuno went out back to do the penalty sprint for losing.
"GO!" Daichi clapped his hands. They sprinted up the grassy hill. I looked back. The game inside had ended. Shinzen was getting ready to do their sprints.
Karasuno came back. We handed them their waters again and some towels. I walked back over to Kageyama.
"What did you want to tell me earlier?"
"It's not important." I didn't push.
"(Y/N)!" Kuroo called out to me from across the gym. He motioned for me to come over.
"Please excuse me for a second." I ran over. "Hey, Kuroo. What's up?"
"Nothing much, but I think we're about to go in for dinner. Come sit with Kenma and I!"
"Okay." I smiled. The teams helped tidy the gym before leaving for the cafeteria.
