CHAPTER 1

"It's only for a few a little while."

I stared out the passenger window, watching the trees blur together.

"That's what you said about the last place, do you know how hard it is to make new friends?"

My mother glanced over at me before going back to the road. "Emily. We've been through this, you're a sweet girl, and anyone would want to be your friend. Besides, I know you're going to love this place."

"Where exactly are we going?"

"Back to where it all started; my home town. I can finally show you where I grew up."

"You never talk about where you're from. So why now, why go back?"

My mother sighed and tightened her grip on the stirring wheel just slightly. "It's complicated, it always has been. There has been so much I've wanted to tell you, and never got the chance to."

"Is it because of dad?" My father passed away when I was six, and since then my mother's never really brought him up.

"No, Emily. It's a lot of information, nothing to do with your father, well maybe a little about him, but I don't want to talk about him. I just know you're going to very confused and possibly upset that I didn't tell you sooner."

"When will be a good time, because whenever I ask about him you don't seem to want to answer? Was he in a gang? Did he hit you..?"

"Emily enough! I said I didn't want to talk about it."

From then on, the car ride to our new home was filled with silence. I didn't want to start up a new conversation, afraid she might snap the stirring wheel in half the way she was gripping it. With a sigh I pulled out the book I've been reading for the past week. A thick rich leather bound book, with over five hundred pages. After graduation I got a job at our local library part time, while taking a few online classes. Since then I started reading more and more books. It was during summer break when I found this particular one, covered in dust in the back of the storage room.
Clearing my throat I settled into my seat and picked up where I left off. It was a passage written in diary form back in 1787.

"My dearest Elijah, I know I have not been there for you like a mother should have been. I wish I could change things but I had to leave. I had to put it all behind , to protect your father, our pack, and most importantly, you my son. As I sit here writing this letter to you, knowing it will be my last, there are no amount of apologies I wish to give you. No amount of I love you's I wish I could tell you. From the moment I held you in my arms, to the day I left, I knew you were going to be something special. That little boy I left only months ago, will surely grow up to be an amazing king to our pack. I am growing weak, my love. I just want you to know that I will always love you, and someday you will find someone who will love you just as much, and even more.
I love you,
Mom"

I wiped my eyes, and felt the car start to drift, I looked over at my mom, whose eyes looked like they had glazed over. We started to swerve off into the other lane, the car honking on the opposite side.

"Mom, the car!"

She shook her head and swerved the car back into our lane. "What happened to you? You almost killed us." I breathed out, with a hand on my chest.

"Sorry sweetheart, must be getting tired. I'm good now, we're almost there." She shook out her shoulders and continued to drive, but her grip on the stirring wheel tightened. I watched her and the road just in case she decided to have another episode. She glanced over at me with a smile and looked down at the book in my lap.

"That book looks like its seen better days."

I shrugged and put the book away. Leaning back into my seat I decided to catch up on some sleep, knowing we still had four hours until we got there. I closed my eyes, letting my thoughts drift. A large beast like creature flashed in my mind. It was fast, and it was running right towards me. I took off in a random direction, glancing back I watched it pick up speed. I glanced around my surrounding noticing I was in a wooded area. I looked back again and the beast was closer, its sharp teeth snapping at my feet. I was starting to run out of breath.
I made it to a clearing when I felt a heavy weight knock me over. I was afraid to move, to even breathe for that matter. I felt one of its paws roll me over, my eyes closed, its breath hot on my face. I slowly opened my eyes and came face to face with a massive wolf, it had to be at least 10 feet tall. It's fur dark as midnight with hints of dark blue, its teeth were sharp like razors and looked like they could tear through anything. But the thing that stood out the most, were its eyes. A mix between lilac and moonlight.

The wolf looked off into the woods, its ears perked up, and everything began to fade.
