I was able to get some sleep last night, though it wasn't a very deep sleep. I managed to stay as myself the entire night though. I could tell this when I woke up because nothing had changed. The bars on the windows of our bedroom were intact and undamaged. The dresser had everything in the same place as where they had been when we went to bed. So I hadn't gone crazy and trashed the room. The door looked fine too and I was satisfied when I could hear the easy breathing of the guards outside the door. But most importantly I could hear Alex's breathing. He had a little smile on his face as he slept. I could feel his contentment as he dreamt. He was having a nice dream, and that's all I want for him. Because when we're awake it seems all that we have is stress and questions that no one can answer. There's tension and pain. But seeing him sleep peacefully, no pain in his features and no tension in his muscles it fills me with the same peace because he deserves this. He deserves a few hours of happiness. He deserves more than a few hours but that doesn't seem possible until we can cure me of whatever is wrong. I move to slide out of bed as quietly as I can to have a shower but Alex stirs and wraps his arms around me.
"Good morning," he smiles with his eyes still closed.
"Morning," I reply, stroking his hair.
"Did you sleep alright?" He asks. But I can hear his real question: Did you go crazy last night?
"Well I didn't trash the room or kill anyone so I'd say so," I smile slightly.
"That's good, I'm glad to hear that." He smiles back. His eyes are open now and they lock with mine. I can't help but stare at him, first thing in the morning he's so beautiful. His hair is slightly messed up, his eyes still slightly closing from being tired but the smile on his face is so real, so perfect.
"What are you looking at?" he asks gently.
"You look so cute in the morning." He just laughs at me and pulls me to him for a kiss.
"Not as cute as you."
"I propose we get the doc to do a blood test and see if there are any issues internally that could be influencing your behaviour. If we can determine whether it's a physical or mental problem then that can help us fight it." Robert says from across the table.
"It's probably the best idea we have," Alex says. They both look to me. "Will you let us do a blood test Lily?"
"Yeah, I guess so." I say bravely. They don't need to know that I don't like needles.
"Great! I'll call Doc and arrange for you to head down there soon." Robert says, standing from the table.
"You don't need to be worried Lily, it's just a needle."
"I'm not worried." I lie. He just smirks, seeing right through me.
The needle puncturing the skin on the inner part of my elbow hurt a little bit but I was more focused on memorising every feature of Alex's face. It was a good distraction. He had a kind smile on his lips the entire time the blood was being taken from me. He understood that I wasn't a fan of needles, but I understood that it was necessary. Honestly I haven't changed that much since becoming a vampire. I mean yeah now I like blood and stuff but the things I did and didn't like as a human haven't really changed. Which is a massive comfort, that I'm still me. Well until I sleep it would seem.
"That should be enough." The doc says, stepping away from me. I relax my arm to my side and look at his back. He didn't waste any time and went straight to his microscope.
After looking intently into it for a few minutes, with Alex, Robert and I just sitting and waiting the Doc turned.
"There's something wrong with her blood alright, take a look at this." He says, beckoning us all over. Alex looks into the microscope first, then Robert and then last but not least, I have a look. I don't understand what i'm looking at to be honest. I can see some cells still moving a little, some appear bigger than others. But I have no idea what looks alarming to the others.
