Chapter 10: Once a chicken always a chicken

“Tell me what?” Alex asked, walking in. He looked healthier, and when he saw my panic stricken face he looked at me questionably.

“Nothing.” I blurted out, Robert just looked at me with an encouraging smile and I knew I had to tell him soon. I took a deep breathe, grew some balls and faced Alex.

“Let’s go talk,” I said. Walking up to my room ready to open the lid on the jar I’ve been hiding my feelings in.

I don’t know whether it was the expectant look on his face or the look in his eyes but suddenly the lid on my jar of feelings was too tight for me to open and my inner chicken came out. I just couldn’t get those 3 words out, instead I found myself searching my brain for a lie or an excuse. Why can’t I just say it? I could end both his pain and mine by just saying it, like I want to. But part of me doesn’t want to. Part of me still hasn’t forgotten what he did, he took me away from my life and now I’m stuck here probably forever. I know I should let it go and just be happy with the hand I’ve been dealt but unfortunately, I’m a stubborn person. The queasy, uneasy feeling in my stomach did not stop as Alex waited patiently for me to find my voice. To voice those words he’d been dying to hear since day 1. But no, my stubborn side has to win.

“I miss my family,” Ok so I’m not actually lying, I really do miss my family and want to see them, it’s just not what I was originally going to say. But when those words left my mouth I saw his face drop, he’d been hoping.

“I know Lily, but you can’t go back.” His face void of any emotions, I knew he’d been waiting for me to say those 3 words, but I tried not to let him get to me.

“But Alex if you really love me you’ll let me visit them, just for a day please?” I begged, looking into his eyes. I saw him searching mine before he slowly started shaking his head.

“No Lily, I’m sorry but no. You cannot leave. You get to stay with me,” he gave me a heartwarming smile that almost pushed me over the edge of my control, I nearly slipped and confessed it all but alas I managed to stand my ground.

“Get out.”

“No.”

“Get out, Now!” he smirked and saluted, before marching out of my room.

“Jerk!” I yelled, diving onto my bed and screaming into my pillow. That boy just really pissed me off, but I know that I deserve it. I cried myself to sleep that night.

Alex’s POV.

As I was returning from my hunting trip feeling stronger and healthier, I heard muffled voices coming from the kitchen. I’m guessing it was Lily and Robert, I guess they never moved. I walked quietly towards the door and pressed my ear against the old wood.

“Don’t keep him waiting too long, ok? Or else I WILL tell him.” I heard Robert say in all seriousness. I decided now was probably a good time to make my presence known before I get caught eaves dropping on my mate and best friend. I took a few steps back before walking forward again and walking into the kitchen.

“Tell me what?” I asked, laughing on the inside at the priceless look on Lily’s face as I surprised her.

“Nothing!” She blurted out, then proceeded to blush. Ok something’s going on. I saw Robert turn and give her an encouraging smile. What? I watched as Lily took a deep breath and a determined look fall upon her face.

“Let’s talk,” she said, walking away in the direction of her room. I gave Robert a ‘what the hell did you tell her?” kind of look and he just shrugged and grinned. I rolled my eyes and followed Lily to her bedroom.

I stared at her, waiting. I felt a rush of excitement run through me as I guessed what her and Robert may have been talking about, and what she was going to tell me. Just 3 words that would change my life. Just 3 little words. She opened her mouth to speak, an encouraging smile on my face as I waited in anticipation.

“I miss my family,” I was about to say I love you too when I realized what she actually said. I felt my face drop without my permission.

“I know Lily but you can’t go back.”

“But Alex if you really love me you’ll let me visit them, just for a day please?” I know what she’s trying to do. Use my love for her advantage. And it very nearly worked as I looked into her eyes and saw the desperation and hurt in them. But I couldn’t do it. Not yet, in the future maybe but not until our future is set in stone. So I shook my head slowly.

“No Lily, I’m sorry but no. You cannot leave. You get to stay with me,” I teased, flashing her one of my smiles. Her eyes widened and she looked to be having an internal debate.

“Get out.” Ok, so teasing strategy to make her smile did not work, so I smirked and saluted, before marching out of her room.

“Jerk!” She yelled as I left. I stood outside her room just listening, and then I heard her muffled scream that led into tears. Both hers and mine. I keep hurting her, it breaks my heart to do it but I have to. I let a few small tears escape as I listened to my soul mate crying herself to sleep over me being an ass. But she doesn’t understand. Until she is a vampire like me, I have to be within a certain distance of her without going insane. It nearly killed me to go hunting earlier but I stayed close to home, enough that I could still feel her aura, the connection our minds share as soul mates. She has no idea what she does to me.

After a while I heard her crying stop and her breathing even. She had fallen asleep. I cracked open the door, peering inside. When I was positive she isn’t awake I walk over to her, laying down beside her, stroking her hair.

“I just can’t risk losing you Lily. I’m so sorry you’re hurting.” I kissed her forehead before getting up to leave. I stole one more glance at her peaceful face as she slept before leaving my beautiful angel to her dreams.

Here it is, finally. It's been in my book for a while but I forgot to type it up and post it :P Sorry it's not superlong but there are some longer chapters to come! They're pretty much written so they should be up soonish, we'll see :D Also I made a new friend recently here on wattpad, IvanaXP and this chapter is dedicated to her!
