“I'm so sorry.” I say as I plunge it through her back, through her heart. Mariah stumbles backwards, away from Alex to face me.
“You-” She starts but can't finish, she collapses onto the ground in a heap, her dark eyes moving, the dark liquid within changing, like the sun rising, light spreads through them before they freeze over once and for all.
I step forward in time to catch her as she falls, falling to my knees as I do. Her frozen eyes stare at me, though her chest no longer rises. My eyes close as I clutch to her limp body, my head hanging. I can feel the warmth of her skin growing colder each second. I feel Alex behind me, his arm going around my shoulder. He doesn't say anything, just lets me hold my best friend and cry. Because even after everything she was my best friend, one of the reasons I fought Alex for so long, and I just killed her. In that last moment, as her eyes began to change I saw some of the old Mariah, the girl she was before any of this supernatural stuff came into our lives.
The time comes though when I can't cry anymore, when I need to let go and return home with Alex. I lay her flat on the ground and close her eyes before standing and turning to Alex.
"Can we go now please?" I ask.
"Yeah, come on." He says gently, still in slight shock like I am from the encounter.
As we get closer to the castle we notice that the fight is almost over. And our side victorious. I see one man in the distance, and I recognise him immediately.
"Alex, that man." I say pointing to him. "He tortured me."
"What? Lilly are you alright?"
"I don't think so, I don't know."
"We have to get to the doctor then."
"We can't, not until the fight is over."
"Then let me kill him." He says, his glare dangerous towards the man.
"What if you get hurt though?"
"Trust me, only one of will get hurt. And it isn't going to be me. Stay here, and stay low." He says, kissing me and taking off running. I do as he says and lay lower on the ground, my body protesting at the pain working through my entire body.
I choose not to watch, not wanting to see Alex like that. But after a little while he isn't back I lift my head higher to check on him. He appears suddenly in front of me and I jump out of my skin, a small scream escaping my mouth.
"It's only me."
"You scared the life out of me."
"I'm sorry baby, come on, the fights over. Let's get you to the doctor."
"No, can we go to our room first please? I really want a shower."
"Lilly you're hurt."
"Please? I'll be quick."
"Are you sure you're ok? You haven't said anything for a while..." He says as we enter our bedroom.
"I'm not sure. I'm sorry I just have a lot going through my head."
"Do you regret it?" He asks.
"No, I don't. It hurts that it happened but after what she did to me, and what she was about to do to you... I don't regret saving you." I reply honestly.
"Thank you, for doing that." He says, kissing my forehead. I wince as my injures begin to hurt again.
"We need someone to look at you." He says instantly, gently holding my arms to look at me.
