it was past 4 pm the day after it happened. the doctor could somewhat stabilize changkyun's vitals once again, but all of them knew that the time was running out. he had to wake up and kihyun had to tell him that he remembered, that he loved him back because he doubted that changkyun heard any of what he said the night before. if he wouldn't wake up in time, the next morning, they would perform the surgery. it is their obligation to save people's life and if this was the only way, they'd have to do it no matter what. kihyun knew that he could save him. he knew that if the younger would just wake up, he could pull him out of the misery he was in, but if he wouldn't wake up, it was over. yeah, he would be cured by surgery but the brown haired couldn't let it come to this. not now. not after everything that happened. changkyun has endured all this pain for so long and for it all to be thrown away just like that by erasing his ability to feel love again, it couldn't happen like this. so he hoped. kihyun hoped that changkyun would wake up before the next morning, so that they could once and for all set things right.
at this moment, kihyun was sitting next to the bed. he was holding changkyun's hand with both of his own, his head down and his eyes closed. he waited. and just a few moments later, he felt changkyun's grip weakly tightening around his own. kihyun's head shot up, his eyes wide open. he heard a small groan coming from changkyun's direction, before the younger let out a soft sigh. before doing anything else, kihyun reached for the small remote on the bedside table on which he pressed the button, sending out a signal that would let the doctor know that something was happening.

"hey, changkyun?" kihyun almost whispered but it was audible enough for the younger to react. he opened his eyes, struggling a bit as to how heavy and tired they were. then he looked around, seemingly confused about what had happened and why he was here, waking up like this again. but as soon as his eyes locked with kihyun's, he stiffened in his position and seemed to suddenly be wide awake again. he had to figure out what was real and what not.

"hey, are you okay? you're safe, don't worry changkyun, i'm here. i'm right here." kihyun said as softly as he could and changkyun responded by cracking a small smile while nodding. he was real.

"i- i think so, yes. i'm okay. tired, but alright."

"no wonder. you were out for quite a long time." kihyun chuckled lightly. in this very second a doctor and a nurse rushed in the door, immediately coming towards the bed to check on their patient. "it's okay, they're just checking up on you. i'm not going anywhere." kihyun reassured the younger who tightened the grip around the older's hand, his eyes opening wide and showing great discomfort as soon as kihyun moved away a bit, so that the doctor had more room to do whatever he needed to. it did not take long until the doctor finished some tests with the help of the nurse, now ready to report what the situation was.

"mr. im, we're so glad to see you awake again. if you hadn't woken up until tomorrow morning, we would've had to perform surgery. however, it seems like this won't be necessary anymore. i checked your vitals and we quickly ran some of the deciding tests and it looks like you're going to be just fine. for now you, mr. im, have to get rest. lots of it, but i'm sure you'll be taking care of that." the doctor said, turning towards kihyun who gave him a responding nod in return. "i will let the both of you know more about further actions and we'll talk everything out tomorrow morning. if everything goes to plan, you can go back home within two weeks. now though, i think the two of you need to talk things out first, so we'll leave you alone. a nurse will come in few more times today to check on your condition, but other than that, i'll see you in the morning. you know how to reach us if something is up." he explained and both, changkyun and kihyun, once again gave him a thanking nod. with that, the doctor and nurse excused themselves and made their way out of the room, leaving the two alone. changkyun still looked somewhat confused, so kihyun made sure to explain everything he couldn't the night before. with that, he tightened his grip around the younger's hand again and left a gentle peck on the back of it. he was so relieved that he immediately felt tears forming in his eyes again. he was so happy that the both of them were okay now or at least were going to be. there was a moment of silence between the both of them, as to why the younger decided to start the conversation.
