Now that you know a little about each of us, I will tell you about the summer of 1959.
It was a hot day like always. The whole summer it was 90-100 degrees.
I was heading to the treehouse with Gordie. I had on overalls with a white shirt under them and my dirty converses. Gordie wore a striped shirt and dark pants.
As we got closer to the treehouse we could hear Teddys high pitched laugh. I walked up the ladder with Gordie behind me. "Open up you idiots! It's burning up out here!" I shouted at them. "Geez fine lady!" Teddy said, laughing. "Stop calling me that," Teddy knew I hated being called lady so he called me it whenever he could. The latch opened slowly and I saw a smiling face looking down at me. It was Chris. He motioned for me to come in. I climbed in quickly with Gordie behind me. Teddy and Chris were playing a game of cards. "Do you wanna join," Chris asked all of us. I was never any good at cards so I said no and started looking through the magazine I brought. Gordie said sure and Teddy dealt him in.
As I was just about to say something, we hear an urgent pounding on the latch. "That's not the secret knock!" Gordie said. "I forget the secret knock! Let me in!" We knew exactly who it was. "Vern," we all said in unison.
Chris, who had a cigarette in his mouth, got up and moved the table that they were playing cards on and opened the latch. Vern busted in the treehouse saying, "Oh man! You won't believe this! This is boss! Hold on. Let me catch my breath...I ran all the way from my house!" Gordie looked at him surprised. You see Vern was never really much of a runner, so for him to run all the way from his house, well that must mean it was really important.
As soon as Vern had said he ran all the way from his house, a song popped into my head and it must've popped into the others heads too because we all started sing the song, 'I ran all the way home.' Vern was pleading for us to listen. Chris motioned for the rest of us to stop, "Wait guys!" As Vern was about to begin, we started singing again. "Whatever! Screw you!" Vern stated seriously.
"What is it?" I asked still laughing. "Can you guys camp out tonight? I mean, if you tell your folks we're gonna tent out in my back field?" Vern asked excitedly. "Yeah, except my dads kinda been on a mean streak lately. You know, drinking a lot," Chris told us as he dealt the cards again. "You've got to! Sincerely!" Vern pleaded. "Can you Gordie?" Gordie nodded his head in response. "Y/N, can you?" Vern asked me with his eyes wide. "Yeah! I don't think my dad will even notice I'm gone," I said, taking a sip of my coke.
"So what are you pissing and moaning about Verno?" Teddy asked annoyed. "I knock" Chris said as he knocked on the small table. "What! You liar! You ain't got no pat hand! You didn't deal yourself no pat hand!" Teddy yelled. "Make your draw shit heap." Chris taunted.
Then Vern would ask a question that would change us forever. We had no idea what were in for.
