We walked up to a huge bridge with water underneath. Vern looked back. "Any if you guys know when the next train is due?" He asked with a worried sigh. "We could go down to the route 136 bridge," I said with a frown. "What, are you crazy? You walk 5 miles down the river, you gotta walk 5 miles back! That could take till dark! If we go across here, we can get to the same place in 10 minutes!" Teddy explained. "But if a train comes there's nowheres to go," Vern shrugged. "No there isn't! You just jump!" He said, like it was the safest thing. "Teddy, it's 100 feet!" Chris said, surprised that he would even suggest that. "Yeah! What the hell Teddy!" I smirked. He rolled his eyes and shrugged. "Look! You guys can go around if you want. I'm crossing here. And while you guys are dragging your candy-asses halfway across the state and back, I'll be waiting for you on the other side, relaxing with my thoughts," Teddy said mockingly. "Do you use your left hand or your right hand for that?" Gordie asked, smirking. We all laughed but Vern didn't understand. "You wish!" Teddy said as he started walking down the bridge. We all followed.
I saw Gordie from the corner of my eye. He reached down to feel the tracks to see if a train was coming. I guess he didn't feel anything because he started walking.
It was really a pretty sight. I was in front, Chris behind me, then Teddy, then Vern, and Gordie. I looked back to see Vern crawling on the tracks. "What the hell are you doing Vern?" I laughed. Chris turned around and started laughing too. Teddy was cackling. It's a wonder we all didn't fall off the the bridge then. Gordie didn't laugh.
"I lost the comb," Vern said sadly. "Forget it, Vern," Gordie said, hiding his laugh. Me, Chris, and Teddy shook our heads and went on.
I was concentrating real hard on where I was stepping. God forbid I make a wrong step and up falling. The spaces between the boards were actually really big.
"TRAINNN!!!" I heard Gordie yell from behind me. We all shot our heads back and low and behold, a train. I started running faster than I'd ever ran. We all did. Except Vern. "OH SHIT!" Teddy yelled. "fuck!" I said under my breath. I could faintly hear Gordie yelling. I looked back a little, still sprinting. Vern was crawling on the tracks still, only a little faster. "GET UP VERN GODDAMNIT!!" Gordie screamed. Gordie actually picked him up. Life or death man.
Vern finally started running. But then he fell. "GET UP!!" Gordie screamed. "I don't wanna! We're gonna fall!" Vern sobbed. "WE ARE GONNA DIE GODDAMNIT!!" Gordie screamed. Vern finally got up and they started making some real speed.
"Go, Y/N!" Teddy and Chris shouted. "I am!!" I yelled back. I could hardly hear a thing over the train.
"GO VERN!!" Gordie yelled. "I'm trying!!" Vern said sobbing. Me, Chris, and Teddy had made it to the end. "MOVE YOUR ASS MAN!" Chris yelled to them.
I was stunned. I was still trying to collect my thoughts. I finally said something. "DONT DIE ON US GUYS!!" I yelled to them. I don't think they could hear us. The train was right behind them.
I felt a warm tear drop onto my face. I'd lost hope. They jumped. I quickly wiped it away. We ran over to them. They were on the ground coughing and holding there heads. "Goddamnit guys!" I said with a relieved sigh. "Hey! Atleast we know when the next train was due!" Chris said with a smirk. I elbowed him.
