After they had left, we were all grinning. We'd waited for this day for longer than I could remember. "Suck my fat one? Whoever told you that you had a fat one, Lachance?" Chris asked, smiling. "Biggest in four countys!" He laughed. I scoffed at him. "Are we gonna take him?" Vern asked, coming back from the bushes with Teddy. "No," Gordie said. "B-but we came all this way, we were supposed to be hero's," Teddy said, sadly. "Not this way, Teddy. Chris gimme a hand," Gordie said.
I was still shocked from all that had happened, that I was silent.
Ray Browers body was found, but neither our gang, nor their gang got the credit. In the end, we decided that an anonymous phone call was the best thing to do. We headed home. And although many thoughts raced through our heads, we barely spoke. We walked through the night and made it back to Castle Rock, a little past 5:00 on Sunday morning, the day before Labor Day. We'd only been gone for 2 days, but somehow, the town seemed different. Smaller.
"Well, see you in school," Vern said. "Yeah," We all replied in unison. "See you in Junior High!" Teddy said.Vern walked off to his house.
He stopped and picked up something. "A penny!" He said enthusiastically. I scoffed with a smile. "Well guys. I better get home before my mom puts me on the 10 most wanted list!" Teddy said. We all gave him a smile and he walked away. He stopped. "Hey guys. No hard feelings?" He asked. "No way man!" We all said in unison. "Have gun will travel reads the card of a man! A knight without armor in a savage land! His fast gun for hire heeds the calling wind!" Teddy sang, until he got far enough to where we couldn't hear him. They were gone.
