CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Immediately we get home, we go to the room. Don is surprisingly nice. To be sincere, I expect him to yell at me, but he doesn't. He throws his black shirt at me, and I pick it up in confusion.

"Put it on," he says. I am confused, but at the same time, I am happy. I have always wanted to wear his shirt again because of how good it felt the first time.

"OK," I say, walking into the closet and changing into his shirt. I can't point out a particular expression from him because I have seen a lot today.

We are both served dinner in our room. It is like he knows I am tired. We eat dinner silently, and for the first time, I eat with him without fear.

He suddenly grabs my hand.

"I'm sorry, Nala. I'm just scared of losing you too," he says, and I give him a weak smile. I don't know what 'too' means, but I am not ready to ask him. When we finish dinner, our plates are taken away by Claire, and Don kisses my forehead.

I don't fall asleep immediately because I keep replaying everything. Is Don really being nice to me? I actually think we were making progress; if it continues this way, things will only go uphill. After the one month we've been together, I can say this night is the best I have had. After a few minutes, I fall asleep.

***************************************

I wake up and, as usual, Don isn't there. He wakes up before me all the time. It doesn't bother me much; I am used to it. I get dressed and put on a skirt and a top. I don't want to wear something short because I know Don doesn't like skimpy clothes on me. Maybe he doesn't find them attractive, or maybe I am not attractive to him. I shake my head to clear my mind. It is not the best time to think about what Don thinks of me.

I go downstairs to get breakfast.

"Morning," I announce, and all of them spin around.

"Morning!" they all say rather cheerfully.

"Is there something I am missing out on?" I ask.

"We should be asking you that," Claire says.

"I don't understand you."

They giggle.

"But we do, Nala," Betty teases.

"Seriously guys, what is it?" I ask again.

"Don was extra nice to us this morning, can you believe it? He actually smiled," Ella says.

"I have nothing to do with that," I reply coyly.

"Of course you do."

Claire sets my breakfast in front of me.

"If you say so." I take my first bite of food, soon stuffing my face.

"You'll be late for school," Ben warns, smiling.

"I'm coming." I chug my orange juice and grab my backpack.

"I'm ready," I say, chuckling.
