CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Don's POV

Carson tells me it would be better we go home before the attack takes place. I really don't understand why Kimberly would do something like this. I make it clear to her that our relationship has no emotional connection. I guess she just can't keep to the contract.

I don't even know how to break the ice to Nala. I suddenly enjoy being around her.

As I wake up in the morning, I wait till Nala wakes up. I want to tell her myself.

I stare at her as she stirrs in her sleep. She is really cute.

"Morning," I say as she wakes up.

She frowns upon seeing me.

"Why are you still at home?" she questions.

For a moment, I am happy she cares; then, I think, what if she is happy I am leaving. I become pensive.

"I need to tell you something," I say.

"What?" she asks.

"I have to travel today."

A look of panic appears on her face.

"It's just a fight, Nala. I will be back soon," I say.

She isn't paying attention to me, so I don't think she hears me. I tap her continuously.

"Nala, Nala."

She turns sharply towards me and asks, "Sorry, but must you be there?"

"Yes, Nala, I have to be there, but I will be back in a week. There is nothing to be worried about," I say.

For a minute, I begin to wonder if the act she is putting up is an indicator that she cares. What if she forgets about me? I doubt that she would forget me in a week.

I move closer to her and hold her hands tightly in mine.

"Nala, you'll be fine. You can even go out with your friends," I gesture.

She nods slowly as I stand up, kiss her cheek and leave the room.

I give Claire little notes to give to her every morning in my absence.

I go to Carson so we can leave.

************************************

As soon as we get home, I settle in and start plans for the attack. I don't care if I kill Kim at this point. She betrayed me, and she is sure to pay for that.

"Your dad requests your presence," Carson says.

It has been three days since my arrival, and nothing has happened. I don't think I can make it back to Nala in time.

I nod at Carson as I stand up to go to my dad's office. As soon as I get there, I sit on the chair facing him.

"Afternoon," I say, making sure he knows how uninterested I am in whatever conversation he is intending to kick-start.
