Chapter 11
The minute the bell went I went searching for Harry. He wasnt anywhere. I checked outside, most of the classrooms, the lunch hall, the sports hall and I even walked straight into the boys cloakroom. I asked about and no one had seen him. I decided to go eat my lunch. I grabbed the cake out of Bloom's locker and chucked the people into the bin. Hopefully they were recycable! I went and pulled up a chair beside Blue and Matty. Mattys eyes widened when he saw the cake.
"Yum!" I laughed. I cut it with the knife and we all took a slice. I asked if they had seen Harry. Blue told me he went home. So the date wasnt happening? I felt down the rest of the day. I went to study hall with Ellen and we chatted for a while but I couldnt concentrate. Harry tore at my heart. It felt like there was a bee buzzing in there!
The last class finally arrived. I took my seat in Art and began to drift off as the teacher talked about da Vinci then the intercom broke into my boredom. I listened I recognised the voice. It was Harrys!
"A certain girl left an extremely important question unanswered. I had to avoid her all lunch and get her friend to tell her I went home so I could do this..." He sounded so nervous it was cute!
"So if your answer is yes please meet me at the gate at four if your answer is no I will wait at the gate all day just in case you come." I cringed he was so cheesy. I watched the clock tick past minute after minute until eternally later the bell rang. I jumped out of my seat and pushed past everyone in the hallway. He was there. Leaning against the gate. How come he looked so good in out ugly green uniform? He flashed me a grin. I waved and ran to meet him.
"So is that a yes?"
"Yes!" He looked releived. Was he expecting me to say no? We walked hand in hand down the street. I peered through the charity shop windows. In the window hung the most beautiful second-hand dress I had ever seen. It was sky blue the same colour as my eyes. It was stunning. It flowed long and there was a train with little dimontes trailing up the train. There was a silver belt round the waistband that looked out of place with the flowing material but it could be altered. There were dimontes around the neckline and the arms were an opaque material. I wanted it badly. Harry laughed at the way I seeped what it looked like into my brain.
"Want to check it out?"
I nodded. The woman took it out of the window. I fingered the material gently. It was so elegant.
"Want to try it on dear?" The lady asked.
I sucked in my breath.
"Really can I?" I asked.
The lady chuckled and nodded. She pointed towards the changing room. I carefully stepped into the dress and pulled it on. I looked at myself in the mirror. I almost cried. I looked like her. I stepped out from behind the curtain. Harry stepped back and whistled.
"Whoa" he gawped.
"You look..well amazing!" I wiped my eyes quickly with the back of my hand. Harry looked concerned but I shook my head to say I was fine.
I went back into the changing room and stepped out of the dress. I stood back and looked at it hanging up. I stepped out and Harry and the lady looked awkward and changed the subject from whatever they were talking about. I looked at them suspiciously. I asked the lady to keep it for me. She smiled kindly. We stepped out onto the street and I sighed.
"Wow." Was all I could say.
We sat in Starbucks and Harry ordered me a caramel frappacino. We talked so easily. Then he asked me about my parents.
"My dad..lives in America and my mum has her own business." I told him. He nodded. He probably wanted more but what could I tell him?
"And you?" I asked him.
"My mum passed away a couple of years and my dad..." He sighed sadly.
"He em.. Hes a hopless case." I nodded understandably. I took his hand.
"Drink?" I asked. He nodded slowly.
"Sometimes I have to get out of there Im afraid he'll hit out or hurt my little sister."
I wanted to take him in my arms and tell him it was all right. Tears escaped out of his eyes. I gripped his hand tighter.
"Poppy has down syndrome." He explained. I guessed Poppy was his sister.
"It can be difficult. We live with Granny a lot but I still feel like I have to protect her. Im the closest thing she has to a dad right now." He was going through so much that I didnt know about.
"Lets get out of here." He offered. I sensed he needed to be outside. He led me out onto Caramel Square by the hand and took me down the back of Caramel Square. There was a beautiful moon lit lake. A tree hung over the lake like it was hugging the water. He stumbled down the hill and we walked towards the tree. Harry grabbed a branch and pulled himself up. He put his hand out for me and pulled me up. We sat in the nook of the tree. He told me about Poppy. It felt like the nature smiled as he talked about how wonderful she was. I put my head on his shoulder.
"I better leave you home." I didnt want to leave. I wanted to sit in this beauty with Harry forever. I cuddled into him and we sat there for a while longer. Then Harry jumped out of the tree and opened his arms. I jumped down and he caught me. We looked into eachothers eyes but Harry tore his eyes away. We then walked home in silence.
