Jasper and Hazel sat in silence for a moment, staring at each other before Jasper cleared his throat to speak. "I wanted, to tell you how I became who I am."
"A vampire you mean?" Jasper nodded, and a smile graced Hazel's lips. "Tell me whenever you're ready."
"Well, as you know I was a Major in Texas. I was coming back from evacuating women and children from a town, when I came across them," Jasper tensed for a moment, and Hazel rubbed his shoulder. "Maria was their leader, she noticed my uniform and decided that my military prowess would be good for her army. So, she turned me into a vampire."
"Army? Are you saying she was building a newborn army?" He gave her a nod, and she gasped.
"She and the other women were the only survivors from their coven. Maria wanted to get her hunting grounds back, so she created a new born army." Jasper explained, and Hazel nodded.
"In that case, why didn't she kill you after your newborn phase ended? Was it, because of your ability?"
Jasper nodded once again, sorrow filling his eyes, "Once she realized my abilities, I soon became her favorite. I became her executioner, in charge of changing the emotions of the newborns so I could kill them when they were no longer useful to Maria."
"That must've been awful."
"It was, but I was convinced Maria loved me, so I couldn't bring myself to betray her. Until I met Peter."
Jasper smiled, Peter must've been a good friend. "Who was he?"
"A kindred spirit of sorts. He was also in the military, so he and I became close friends. When it came time for him to die... I couldn't bring myself to do it. So I convinced Maria to spare him, because his military knowledge would be invaluable to our cause." Jasper's wistful smile brought a soft smile to Hazel's face as well.
"So, what happened after that?"
"Well, Peter fell in love with a newborn that he and I were supposed to kill. So, I let them escape, and Maria began to fear me, that I'd betray her." The smile disappeared once again, and Hazel felt a bit sad.
"Jasper... What did she do?"
"She planned to kill me. But never got the chance, because Peter came back and told me about vampires coexisting in the North. So I left.." Jasper's fist tightened. "Hazel, there's nothing more painful then being able to feel the emotions of those you kill. It eats you up inside."
"That just proves you're a good person J, you regret your decisions and that means you never meant any of it." Hazel embraced him, shivering for a moment before heating herself up. "But for real, I think it's time for me to go to bed."
Jasper smiled, and whisked Hazel off her feet. In a moment, they were in what she assumed to be his room. It was filled with books, ranging in rarity and age. A rather large white couch sat in the corner of the room, most likely where Jasper read his books. On the opposite wall was a shelf full of records, sitting next to a record player. "You're room is nice Jas, you didn't tell me you were such a book nerd." Hazel laughed, running her fingers along the bookshelf.
"Didn't figure it was important Darlin'." Jasper chuckled. Hazel turned to him, looking him over carefully. It was then she noticed the scars littered over his skin.
"J.." Hazel breathed out as she walked toward him, and took hold of his arm. Studying the scars for a moment, Hazel looked up at Jasper once again. "These scars... They're from your time with that woman Maria, right?"
Jasper nodded, and he went to take off his shirt. Initially, Hazel was surprised by his amazing physique, but after that she noticed the many other scars that littered his body. "I got them from training the newborns, and killing them." Hazel didn't say a word, merely trailed her fingers along the most grievous scars.
