Yesterday you had sat outside in the rain and the dog had comforted you. It wasn't raining anymore, but the grass was still wet and the sun was shining through the clouds now. You were again sitting on the steps of your home, hoping the dog would come back, and it did.
"Hey little fluff" you said, trying to sound cheery.
The dog could tell you weren't really cheery and it started rubbing it's little nose against your leg as if to comfort you. It felt like it was trying to take some of your sadness for itself.
"You can tell, huh" you wiped your cheeks with your sleeve and started petting the dog.
It pressed it's head against your palm and looked very content while you pet it. It closed its eyes and seemed to trust you to look out for it.
"You remind me about me him a lot you know. You've got the same colored eyes and you're very kind and comforting"
The dog looked up at you and you swore it looked like it understood what you were saying. Its little green eyes beamed at you and it looked very happy to be with you.
"I think I'm gonna call you Izuku"
Hearing that name again the dog seemed to get excited. It started spinning in a circle, chasing its own tail as if to try and amuse you. When you said that name, the dog felt like it was familiar, like it was what it was supposed to be called. Like that was its name, always had been.
You let out a little laugh, and smiled at it, even though the smile didn't reach your eyes, it was the first time you had smiled in what felt like forever.
For weeks the dog kept coming back to you. You fed it and gave it water and at some point the pain of losing Izuku wasn't as bad anymore. At some point you started to function, not without the grief but despite it.
