Chapter Thirty-seven: Fourth of July Special Part 2
Josh's POVAfter a solid five minutes of me begging him to not get a mullet now he was sitting in my car, scrolling through Pinterest and looking at Mullets.
"Callum." I whined but my only reply was his cheeky smirk. "You're not seriously gonna do it right?"
Callum shrugged, "I am."
I groaned and leaned back, glancing at the backseat full of fireworks that costed so much Callum and I got dizzy before calling my mom and asking if it was okay to even buy these. (To which she obviously said yes)
Callum was in the drivers seat, and I had my feet kicked up on the dashboard.
Callum sighed as he put down his phone and looked in the mirror, running a hand through his long hair. "I'm getting a Mullet, Joshy." He said upon seeing my hopeful smile and I slump in my seat.
"Don't come crying to me when you look like The Tiger King." I said to Callum who snickered again as we finally started to drive away.
"All I'm saying is that I'd look good in any haircut, whether it's a mullet or a bowl cut." He sent me a glance and a wink, "And once you admit you were wrong, then maybe you'll start listening to me." He teased with a shrug and I crossed my arms and rolled my eyes.
"It's hard to listen to someone that thought his parents were going to eat him in the second grade because they snored and he thought that was their stomach growling."
Callum laughed and hit me on the shoulder, "I was like 7." He defended and then said, "Plus you used to think that the trees in the dark would come alive and eat you."
"You used to have a fear of dogs." I reminded and I could tell that Peanut came into his mind.
"And now I have a dog, see how I came over my fear?" Then he paused, "You have a fear too, wanna know what it is?" He asked, adjusting in his seat.
"What is it?" I asked, genuinely curious about what he might say.
His side profile slowly morphed into an amused grin, "Mullets. And once I get one then you'll be able to overcome your fear."
I groaned, "Callum! Don't get a freaking mullet!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Jesus Christ you guys got a lot of fireworks." My mom said, staring at the car full of them.
Callum grabbed the one with the pig, "There's my personal favorite because it's got a picture of Joshy on it."
Sylvia made a gagging noise as a tease and I rolled my eyes. God she can annoying.
Peanut ran over to Callum's leg and sniffed it for a second before looking at Callum and diving for Callum's feet to bite.
"Mother fucker!" Callum cursed stepped back as the puppy latched his teeth onto his socks. "That's it. I'm putting you on the grill." Callum said, picking the dog up, his sock slipping off of his foot but staying in the dogs mouth. "It's been fun knowing you Peanut."
"Callum don't put the dog on the grill!" I heard my mom yell from around the corner as she had ran into the house to get my dad.
Callum let out a huff of laughter before looking at me and saying, "But Mrs. Hernandez!" He whined like a child, "I got hurted!" He said although the way he was petting the dog fondly proved that, even if Callum was a sick sadistic psychopath, he'd probably not be able to take a single strand fur out of that dogs back.
Callum places Peanut on the ground, "Now if you bite my toes again, I'm going to sit you down and force you to listen to Joshy's singing. Understand?" He asked pointing at the dog again. "Understand?" He repeated and the dog lunged at Callum's finger to bite it.
After we had gotten all the fireworks inside we went back to setting up other fun little Knick knacks, we brought out bubbles, water balloons, water guns and some other stuff.
I didn't know how many people would be here, last year there was the whole neighborhood but the year before that there was more because the whole neighborhood brought their friends.
I just hoped the hamburger dip wouldn't be all gone by the time the party was over because that's the best thing we have here and I was kinda hoping to bring a bowl up to my room after the party and just sit and eat it.
"So Mrs. Hernandez, what do you think about me getting a Mullet?" Callum asked, casually, inspecting his nails as if he was thinking about what color to paint them.
My mom made a face, "Eh, I don't think so Callum. You could use a trim though." She said, running her hands through his hair and he pulled his hair towards him protectively.
"I think I would looked great in a mullet." He said defensively, his chin up in a mock imitating stance.
My mom and I rolled our eyes at the same time, "Whatever you say Callum." She said, taking the words right out of my mouth.
Right now it was 5:37 in the afternoon and the party starts at 7, fireworks start at 9, so we still had an hour and a half before people start arriving.
My sister had made some brownies and, of course, Callum jokes about adding weed. We even brought out a small kiddy pool for the small kids that would be coming down from the neighborhood.
Callum stood back for a second before nodding his head, "I did a good job." He said and I narrowed his eyes.
"You did like 10 percent of this." I said, raising an eyebrow.
Callum sent me a 'duh' look, "Yeah and the 10 percent looks the best out of all of it."
I turned to Sylvia, "I think he's delusional." I stated jabbing a thumb in his direction.
"You didn't notice that until now?" She asked, raising an eyebrow. "I noticed it the second you gave him your ice cream instead of me when we were kids."
I opened my mouth to say something when my mom called out for Callum and I.
"We forgot drinks." She said with a sheepish smile, "Could you run down and go get us some?" She chewed on her lip, her eyes not looking at us. "I know you just got home so I'm sorry but you can't have a party with just water."
I shook my head, "Don't worry about it mom, Callum loves driving, right Callum?" I nudged his side and he nodded.
"Oh yeah. It's my absolute favorite thing to do." He said, staring at my mom before glancing back at me. "But I don't care. Come on Joshy, We've got drinks to get!" He looped his arm with mine and dragged me back to the car.
